I'm attempting to decide between MIT and Stanford for pre-med. I've been to both schools and believe that I would fit in at both. However, my GPA at MIT might be slightly lower. Would this harm my med school application? If not, which school would be better for med school?

What are you thinking of majoring in at MIT?

probably biology

Then there probably isn't a significant difference in GPA between the two departments -- they're pretty equivalent.

You should choose based on which school you feel fits you more.

ah... but that's the other problem. I love MIT... but also feel at home at Stanford.

To be perfectly honest, I would take Stanford if I wanted to do premed. The truth is, sadly, med-school admissions is largely a game. It's a game of numbers and high grades are a premium. Med-school adcoms, unfortunately, do not seem to care very much about how difficult your coursework is.

While the grading in Stanford bio and MIT bio might be fairly similar, that's not the only grades that the adcoms will be looking at. Stanford has an entire slew of extremely easy humanities and social science courses where you can get top grades for doing very little work. And if you're a premed, that's exactly what you want. Sad but true. MIT offers some easy humanities classes too, but not as many as Stanford does.

Hence, the point is, Stanford offers you more opportunities to rack up those easy A's that the adcoms like.
