@curiouspenguin there was one well off non minority students but most of the rest of us at MOSTEC were a mixture. We had a lot of biracial students, as well.
It’s the content of your essays that matter so much more then your stats. Plenty of MOSTEC and MITES, if not most of the students don’t have those freakishly high CC scores. Your extracurriculars and rec letters are important too!
This year the application is different. Not only has E2 been scrapped, you can now rank the programs you want to attend, meaning you can rank MITES, MOSTEC or both, in whichever order.
@collegevisit So I was all over the place last summer and because I chose MOSTEC, I had much more freedom than with any other program. (cough Rank MOSTEC cough)
You guys should all apply to Carnegie Mellon SAMS as well. The SAMS alumni have been killing the game!! If you guys are low-income, consider LEDA Scholars, Bovard Scholars and if you wanna know more, hit me up. Matriculate is also for low income students, so you guys should check it out! My mentor was super helpful
@arinuma They scraped E2!?! Wow, not enough people must have come last summer. Funny enough, I know one person here on CC who chose CMU’s six-week diversity program over E2 so yeah, I can understand why.
@curiouspenguin While having Type 1 Diabetes does not make you a minority in the traditional sense, it is definitely an interesting take on minority status and would be an interesting thing to write about.
Both SAMS and Matriculate/College Point are fantastic programs! I am currently part of Matriculate and am a SAMS 2017 alumni! Many of those who applied and were not offered a spot via MITES also applied to SAMS and got in, so it’s definitely a great alternative. SAMS and MITES are generally similar, but specifically different. Matriculate, as @arinuma stated, provides free college counseling to high-achieving minorities, many of which go off to great school. If anyone of you want to learn more about either program, PM me.
@xxxtaxation they’re a little important but I don’t think they’re deal breakers per say. Just make sure you’re making A’s and B’s lol. And if you mean for MOSTEC, for your project course you do get a lot kind of. I think in the acceptance letter it said that the academic phase, aka the part during the summer, was around 25 hours a week of work. But then again this varies, because it mainly depends on how much work you’re willing to put into the course, and I feel like it also depends on the course you choose
@solarsystem i mean like i sorta kinda have a 4.0, my only B’s on my transcript are from 8th grade and on the app, it asks for grades 9-12th so im going to have to ask my counselor if I can write “4.0”
as for the project course, my friend who was in it last year (who isn’t helping me cuz hes pretty lost with himself, u prob know him lol) said he did astrophysics. what other courses are there
@xxxtaxation Yeah you’ll definitely be fine with that. lol, I did astrophysics last year and I’m pretty sure I know who you’re talking about. Last year there was astrophysics (aka best course w/ best instructor), electrical engineering and computer science, neuroscience, mobile app development, combinatorics, and machine learning. Idk how many exactly got in, but there were around 110 kids in the program.
@mbenitez1201 It’s honestly up to you whether to write it or not. If you feel the need to explain some stuff on your app, or if you just feel like writing about something you like and you didn’t get the chance to write it in another section of your app, go for it. If not, you won’t be like penalized or anything for not writing anything.
@arinuma@solarsystem Do you remember how many Asians/Indians/other overrepresented minorities were at MOSTEC last year? I’m Asian and don’t know if I would have a chance if I applied…
@IndianKid123 eh idk exactly for sure but there was a handful. You’ll be fine, apply either way! I remember last year I decided to apply a few days before the deadline and I didn’t think I would make it, but look where that got me
