(Gotta do this before someone else does!)
Hey everyone! I just wanted to put this thread out for those are applying for the MITES / MOSTEC program for the 2020 season! I am MOSTEC (which is MITES 2.0 don’t @ me) alum ‘19. If you got any questions or if you want your applications to be reviewed, just ask it down in this thread!
Good to all applicants!
Shouldn’t this go in the Summer Programs forum?
What did you write about in your essays? I don’t really know where to start with mine lol
Hey!!! I’m applying for MITES this year and omgg I’m soo nervous! I was lurking on the 2019 discussion and reading through all the rejected and accepted letter and I literally felt so stressed I just could not rip.
I’m scared to apply because #1, my scores just are straight up doodoo, and #2 none of my math teachers like me enough to give me that good, T H I C C letter of rec. Also, in writing essays I keep on running into the problem of wanting to story tell too much and that 300 word limit is KILLING me >:((
I was also wondering, I’m really into Earth Sciences (geology, paleontology, oceanography, glaciology, plate tec., etc), and a lot of ppl don’t really consider that as part of the core sciences though. Is there really a point in talking about it in my app?
What’s the difference between MITES and MOSTEC and how do I apply to one or the other?
@ayahthetiger scores don’t really matter! Even though I applied with a 1480 SAT, there were tons of people who applied with mid-20s or 1200s. I also worried about recommendations when I was applying, but I think your essays will matter more to admissions than your recommendations. Just because you don’t think you’ll get good recommendations doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply! If you want, feel free to dm me if you need essay help of any kind!
Also, although MITES/MOSTEC are STEM camps, that doesn’t mean non-STEM people should apply! A lot of my friends were simply bio people who wanted to do medicine. I think Earth Sciences is a very good passion and will make you stand out in admissions, so yes, I do think it is a good idea to mention in your applications. However, it’s your choice!
For the essay about a passion, should the passion be STEM related, I know some people wrote about music or things outside of STEM? Will it lower the chances?
@luna3002
I didn’t do mine about STEM but I don’t really know lol
I’m currently applying right now. Looking through the old 2019 thread makes me so happy for some reason lol. Goodluck to everyone
I have submitted my application currently hounding my math teacher and counselor to get my recommendations done. I hope they don’t wait till the last minute.
Hello fellow applicants and MITES/MOSTEC alums! I was hoping someone could aid me in my predicament regarding the short answer questions. Would anyone be willing to allow me to DM them to ask for assistance and how they addressed the SAQs?
Also might as well throw this out there, does anyone have any other aspects of identity they wrote about? The ones currently provided are not sufficient for me. I am not a first-generation college student (although I am the first in my family to go into STEM), my Hispanic heritage did not have a very significant effect on my passions, and neither does my gender (I am male). Could I write about being the first in my family to go into STEM and talk about the challenges I faced along the way with that?
As for culture, could I rant about the American education system when it comes to math (I get quite impassioned about that) or should I refrain so as to not possibly insult or discourage the readers from considering my application?
For the standardized testing section, is it okay if I just put my SAT score? I took the PSAT as well but my score was a lot worse because of the awful curve this year…so would it look bad if I didn’t submit my PSAT score?
Yeah i dont really know either, but at least I’m not the only one I’ll just go with what I have
Well shii, ik its a little late but @PhysicsIsNotPhun thank you for the advice!!! I still havent turned my app in although im finished with everything. I just need to upload a pdf of my transcript and i should be good ??
@Blexopolis I just kind of wrote ab how my parents drive me to do better in the future bc of the way they grew up I suppose. I mentioned that I’d be the first woman in my family to (hopefully) graduate from college. Idrk if that fits under first gen or not but oof
What did yall write ab for the invention tho that legit killed me. It took me so long to find an idea but then it randomly hit me out of nowhere and it was so dumb yet kinda good at the same time idk
Could you help review my application?
@veronicaflores yeah i can, just send me a link!
