sigh, I just got rejected from COSMOS. What are my chances of getting into MITES if I couldn’t even get into COSMOS?
@slayerdang It all depends on your application (especially the essays). :^) COSMOS definitely scrutinizes grades (at least I know after attending COSMOS at UC SANTA CRUZ last summer that they will only accept students with at least a 3.5 UW GPA) but MITES might be a little more lenient since they know that low-income people/first-gen/URM tend to face struggles and end up slipping up a bit (although some do have high grades/scores nonetheless). I personally think the essays will make or break an application (I didn’t stand out much with only a few EC’s and one B on my COSMOS app as a sophomore) since they can explain why there might be any discrepancies in grades/test scores and they display personal qualities that the program leaders are looking for. Also some COSMOS clusters are way more competitive than others (for example at UC SC last summer, there was a crazy high acceptance rate for the physics cluster compared to robotics) and when it comes to COSMOS, you’re pretty much competing with mainly Bay Area students for acceptance in.
In short, COSMOS and MITES review applications differently so don’t worry too much since it’s mostly out of your hands after you finish the applications.
@BigGreenTractor thank you
Does anyone know when MITES comes out?
Is it March 15th?
@BigGreenTractor MITES website says mid to late April. Last year acceptances were released at 8 am on April 15th. The count down is on… Ugghhh
@darkermuppet Ahhhhhhh ?
MITES has a 3% acceptance rate compared to COSMOS, which has around a 15-30% acceptance rate depending on campus and cluster.
aH - I’m so terrified of these decisions right now. I know that, realistically, my chances aren’t very high because I’m not low-income, but I’m still holding on to some minuscule hope that should not exist
Best of luck! I believe in you!
@GoBears2023 haha thank you- I hope decisions come out sooner rather than later, because I may die if I have to wait until the end of March
*April, I clearly meant April.
@slytherinriddle
LOL
Good luck you guys! Who knows you might get accepted! One more week… AHH!
I’m a MOSTEC 2018 Alumni. From what I’m seeing here, you guys are getting the wrong idea about what looks important on your high school resume. As the MITES alumni here said in an earlier comment, STANDARDIZED TESTING IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN YOUR APPLICATION. I found out about the OEOP programs in January of 2018, thought it would be beneficial to me, and found out about my acceptance in mid-April like many of you will very soon. At that time, I had only taken the PSAT and gotten a 1340 on it. I had not taken a single SAT or SAT Subject Test, and yet I was still admitted. These programs don’t expect you to have already solved cancer or done something absolutely crazy. They focus on GROWTH. I wasn’t able to do much in my freshman and sophomore year due to economic issues, but I made it very clear in my essays that I wanted to do something extraordinary with my future and thought that these programs would help me. You guys are concentrating too hard on getting into something and thinking about what to do afterwards. I’ve seen my friends go off to prestigious universities and work so hard to get there then they totally crash after they get there. It’s totally defeating the purpose of going to that university. The same thing applies to these OEOP programs. Also, I strongly dislike the fact that people post “Chance Mes” on this and many other forums because it only inflates the poster’s ego and discourages other potential applicants from applying because they see their competition. Best of luck in your decisions.
Any news?
nope
Are they supposed to come out today?
I think Monday
I just wondered if whether or not there were waitlists- or is it just straight up acceptances and rejections (I’ve never applied for a summer program so I dunno- my dumb self finished the application in 1 day, then submitted XD)
Last year, most people on the thread got their decision on April 15th, which was Sunday last year. Meaning if they trend continued, they should release it tomorrow, Sunday, April 14th. Most posted their results before noon that day. There is a high possibility result come out in less than 24hours. But there is still a chance they’ll release it Monday, April 15th, i guess.
I got waitlisted at SAMS. Hoping MITES can come through for me. ?
