MITES 2019

At MITES do they have standardized testing prep?

@TheDarkWizard682 Nope!

Hi guys,
I was wondering how one is selected into either MITES/E2/MOSTEC upon acceptance of the Oeop program.
What makes one candidate stick out and get selected for MITES instead of E2? Is it because one is more qualified than the other or for other reasons? I’d like to know

Another question, how are B’s seen? Will they have a negative impact?
Last quarter I obtained my first B since 7th grade in AP Spanish. (It’s hard)
Now this quarter, I’ve been on thinner ice and will obtain a B in AP Spanish once more, but it also may be a possibility for AP Chemistry. I take one of the hardest course loads and am taking 2 dual enrollment courses and another 2 college courses online if that helps. Thanks…

Also, is this the only chat place? I’ve searched and haven’t heard of anyone talking about the program

@lufalup Hi!

So I I don’t think anyone knows how the selection process works. Just a guess, but they’ll try to see which program would benefit you more. (Also E2 no longer exists, it’s just MITES and MOSTEC)

A couple Bs will not have a negative impact. I had a couple Bs when I applied, but they were all in non-STEM courses. (I had 7 overall + All of my B’s were in english and history classes.) They will also see your application and transcript holistically of course.

Good luck!

Is income a factor in MITES admissions?

@TheDarkWizard682

No, income is not factored in since the program is free. The really don’t care about how much you make, although I think having a lower income may help if you have a good academic record.

@lufalup

MITES is definitely more prestigious than MOSTEC. Its a 3% acceptance rate for a six week intensive program versus a 10% acceptance rate that lasts about 1 week in person and then a couple months online. They do admissions like any other camp. It will be holistically reviewed.

Sams and AI Carnegie acceptance, rejections, waitlist are already out. Or at least most.

Hey. Any previous alumni willing to do a chanceme? Or anyone, honestly. I’d just love some opinions. I just got rejected from the Simons Program in Stony Brook, and I’m honestly really nervous now.
Race: Black
Gender: Male
SAT: 1500
GPA: 4.0
Class Rank: 2/400
Courseload: 15 AP Classes including three sciences (Physics C, Environmental Science, Chem), self-studied trig and took Calc my Sophomore year. Ended up getting a 4.
ECs: Tutoring, Research Program, Governor’s School, SCA
Research Program: I spend 12 hours a week researching Metamaterials. I spent about 6 months learning college level math and science to be able to actually contribute to my program. However, I didn’t write too much about this (big mistake, honestly).

Essays: Wrote about how I want to pursue a doctorate degree in EE and eventually research quantum computing, For the passion one, I decided to go less of a STEM route and decided to write about how I love to learn Spanish. I spend several hours a week reading Spanish books, listening to Spanish media, and even switched my phone to Spanish. For my identity one, talked about how being black puts a certain amount of pressure on me to succeed. I have a real chance to do great things, and its my job, so to speak, to represent the underrepresented. For the challenge, I talked about how my grandpa was murdered three years ago, and I had to step up/get my dad to step up in order to better support our family. For the change one (my worst one in my opinion), I said that I would want a machine that can “produce” food. Manufacture it in a sense. I talked about global warming and reduction of world hunger

@npride101

You look like a really strong candidate. At this point, it will all be based on luck.

@darkermuppet I am in the same situation here. Accepted into SAMS and still waiting on MITES.

My stats are
Gender: Male
Race: Hispanic
Income: Less than 20k
PSAT: 1400
SAT: 1450
AP: Calculus AB and Spanish Literature (Got 5’s),Physics 1 and World History (Got 4’s) and a 2 in Chem as a freshmen.

EC: Senator of Hispanic Honor Society | Founder of the SAT study club | Memenr of NHS | Robotics Outreach Leader | Guitarist in Mariachi Group | Policy Debate (CX) | Work at fast food restaurant as a host

Awards:
Scored in the top 20% in the Junior Breakthrough Challenge

AP scholar with Honors

Qualified to State in Debate two years straight in two different circuits (UIL and TFA)

All Star Cast in Freshmen One Act

Mariachi División 2 in regional competition.

Career Goals: Aerospace Engineering.

My biggest concern is my Math teacher who told me he might gotten letters of recommendation mixed up.

I decided to accept the SAMS and pay the $100, because I didn’t want to lose out on such a great opportunity. MITES is such a long shot for me (although I though SAMS was as well) and I think they both will be a great introduction to college. I think MITES might be a better fit mathematically since I have taken AP Calc. but it is fine, either way.

@darkermuppet

SAMS is a fantastic program. Congrats on being accepted!

Is it too late to update your MITES application if you’ve accomplished a significant achievement?

@AtWitsEnd

Email the admissions committee with your award. You may want to make sure that it is actually “significant” before emailing however, just in case. Feel free to PM me if you want a viewpoint on the award.

So I was wondering… What do they look for in the application?

Do they prefer having a student that has already taken AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, and AP CSA, or do they prefer a student that doesn’t have as much experience and as many higher level science classes? Which student would they more likely accept, as I was wondering since it’s a minority introduction to STEM program… and the person who took those AP science classes already has had an introduction to STEM…

This seems like a dumb question, but I’m just wondering.

@lufalup I believe they accept both types of students. I myself had taken all the courses you listed except for AP Bio, but I think you don’t need them to get in. I’m not sure though.

Would you know whether it’d negatively affect me if I had a job as a tutor, since I get paid? I’m worried it may have hindered my chances of getting in bc this resulted in increasing my income… maybe I’m just looking at it different, or does it work like that?

Could someone chance me please?

Race: Hispanic and white (my dad is a British immigrant)
Gender: Female
Income: more than 150,000

GPA: 3.9 unweighted, 5.04 weighted (4.0 in their scale because B+'s were gotten in middle school)
Class rank: 10/143
AP Classes: Calc AB, Enviro, World History, Psych, Human Geo (got a 3 in Calc AB–bad day–and 4 in Enviro, 5s on everything else); currently taking AP Bio, Lang, APUSH, and Calc BC
PSAT: 760/math, 760/reading

Awards: Spanish 4 Achievement, Character: Tolerance (school), Battle of the Books 3rd Place (Regional)
EC’s: President Gay-Straight Alliance, President & Co-Founder Economics Club, Team Captain Battle of the Books Competition Team, Model UN (running for Treasurer next year)

Volunteering: Key Club (made bookmarks, did drive for Women in Distress and Harvest Drive), volunteer at local science and discovery museum

Short Answer Questions:
Career Goals: Wanting to be a Disney Imagineer/Engineer
Passion: math, and how not being a perfect scorer has allowed me a deeper connection with it
Culture: how being mixed (not pinned down to a certain stereotype, etc.) allowed me to have higher aspirations than a lot of people I was raised around
Challenge: Moving to the UK for 2 years and not being able to ask for help in new environment, then being forced to rely on others for multiplayer games as a form of getting over that when we moved back
Invention: nondiscriminatory AI via teaching it ethics

In addition, I attend a magnet technical school and am in the Networking/Computer Engineering program (96-97 in the class all quarters), so I’ll be certified in A+ and Network+ by the summer. Our school doesn’t offer regular classes except for PE, really, so everyone’s GPA is quite inflated.

Is this program too intense to study for the SAT at the same time?
