chem2047, how hard is it really?

I took ap chem in junior year and got a 4, but my memory on it is hazy.

How much would I need to review for this class before the fall semester starts, and what texts would you guys recommend? I've been using MIT opencourseware to brush up on concepts I've forgotten in addition to learning new concepts.

So, realistically, how hard is it to get an A in this class?

(Btw, I was a good student in high school, 1500+/2200+ SAT with 5's and 4's on most of my AP Tests.)

I’ve heard it’s very intense, one of the hardest classes offered to people that early in their career.

Why do you want to condense the sequence, you don’t seem to have super strong chem credentials, so is there some good reason to do 2047 instead of 2045 and 2046.

Well, I put chemical engineering as my major, and I generally enjoy a challenge but I don’t want to start something that may not be doable. I figured that for a chemE it would be important to go into this advanced class instead of going into chem 2046.

It’s doable, but I just don’t see the advantage. I know a few Chemical Engineers, and none of them took 2047.

Another way of looking at it, is that you’re rushing through the gen chem, so you might not have as strong a foundation for when you take higher level chem e classes.

I personally thought the Chem sequence was rather easy (especially 2045), but I can’t imagine it being done in half the time.

To be fair, much of general chemistry is stupid and in the same vein as what algebra-based physics is to physics (i.e. quite a bit of the memorization is worthless if one understands the underlying principles that tend not to be taught in those courses). I see no reason to draw it out over a year.

For what it’s worth, I also got a 4 on AP chem so long ago and honors Chem 2 was a snoozefest, so 2047 might be just up the OP’s alley.

I took CHM 2047 last fall when I was a freshman. I had also taken AP Chem my junior year in high school and got a 5 on the test. I thought this class would be a good review of general chemistry before I had to take Orgo. I was very wrong. Almost everything we learned was new. The teacher, Dr. Angerhofer, is a physical chemist, so he applied all the general chemistry concepts to physics and quantum mechanics. It was a nightmare. I pulled off a C in the class.

Oh. Umm, would you recommend just taking 2046L then instead? A 4 on AP chem only gets me out of 2045L.
