Do colleges pick the best scores from each complete ACT test that you take, just like they do for the SAT test?

Like, if I get:

30
28
29
24

and then...

25
27
30
26

Will they look at like this...?

30
28
30
26

No. That is one of the big differences between the ACT and the SAT. Most schools will allow you to take your best score from multiple sittings of the SAT. They do not allow it for the ACT. Probably because they do a composite score and the SAT does not.

It depends. S and I have been on 4 college visits. 3 of the 4 do take your highest and create a new composite for admission purposes. I don't know if they use the new composite for scholarships. Ask the schools - the worst they can say is no.

what about with the new writing component

legion,

Interesting. Can you let us know what schools they were. I would like to check their web-sites to see what they say about standardized testing. I have not seen any that allow for the mixing and matching of the ACT scores.

First - these are all LAC in the midwest. The mid-50% have scores from 25/26-29 so they are selective but not the highly selective.

Second - 3 of the 4 do not require the writing portion so S has not taken it yet. He hasn't decided if he will apply to the one that does (he really doesn't want to take it again) even though they are one that will superscore.

Third - I would prefer not to say who they are (actually I can't remember which one doesn't do it). The fact that they do it is not on their websites (regardless if it is SAT or ACT) - it was during the presentations during spring visit days where they said it - nowhere in writing. The websites just say they look at scores, GPA, essay, EC's, etc. - the usual - when determining admission. I feel that if it is not in writing by them, it is subject to change, and I do not want to give out incorrect info.

The other thing to remember is that unlike the SAT where all sittings are sent to the school every time you take it, you can pick and choose which ACT sitting(s) are sent. So for each sitting date, you have to specify which schools get that dates score.

Bottom line - ask if they don't tell you.

Back to lurking............
