hope someone can clear this up for me
what is counted as an EC? some people said that boyscouts/martial arts/music/dance/ lessons count. some of my college counselors say that too
but other college counselors say that extracurricular activities if NOT associated with the school, or have not won any awards DOES NOT COUNT

i have 16 years of piano experience but i don't take music in a competitive approach. if all that time dedication does not count then... wouldn't they view me as someone who just lazes at home since my activities are not associated with the school therefore doesn't count?

i have always thought that the ECs provide an insight of your interests, how well rounded you are and hobbies outside the classroom.

could someone clarify this for me please

I can't imagine what those counselors are thinking that say activities don't count if they're not associated with the school, or haven't lead to any awards. That's bunk.

Anything that you can put into your essay counts. But a UC rep told me that only the activities that are directly related to your major would make much of an difference. They're looking for activities that most people don't do. Such as undergraduate research or participation in an internship.

my essays would describe all they need or my major and its really overkill and unique... i was thinking mayB having different extracurricular would make me look more well rounded rather than only knowing things related to my major

btw what fine line seperates between hobbies and extracurricular?
and do hobbies even go into the extracurricular of the UC app?
she kept saying "those go under hobbies" but there is no hobbies section on the app !

Thats what i was wondering too, does the EC have to be institutionally recognized or can it be something you just enjoy doing (i.e. hobbies)

If there were a hobbies section it would most likely be the EC category
