For those heading out for study abroad for next fall's semester, what's the typical housing for the spring semester?

Single in a dorm?

Logistics of setting up in an apartment for the one semester?

My son would prefer an apartment, but they appear to be full year (or two semester) leases. Others must be in the same boat, so perhaps a sublease is an option. Sublease pros/cons? Ease of sublease? Trying to figure out options.

We are in the middle of this right now. Many juniors opt to sublease- which is pretty easy to do right now because there are many others in the same boat who are going in the Spring. My D did opt to take her chances with Spring housing in the dorms. It is a gamble - we have heard many stories of students who did get singles or apartments on South but just as many who were first given doubles with a roommate. Parents complained and some lucked out. You don’t know what you get until late fall semester.
Another alternative is to wait until he is abroad and get a sublease for Spring then. We have been looking at that right now and there are definitely a few available. Look at Orange Housing sublets to get a sense of what it might be like.

TwoParent -

After a day, our son is thinking about this option as you wrote:

Another is to go to South Campus, by joining in with a couple of friends (add 1 to a two bedroom to up to 3 total).

When we first spoke, he wanted to line up his spring with friends during this semester…but that’s too far ahead. So, we shall see.

Thanks!
