<p>Columbia is a big college town.</p>
<p>Kansas City isn't. UMKC feels more like a commuter school, with only a few blocks near campus having much student focus. It is located near some relatively happening areas of Kansas City. But it's still no college town.</p>
<p>UMKC has a couple of strong programs (music is one, I think) but Columbia is generally considered the stonger campus academically.</p>
