Thanks to the students for posting their views. I've been accepted into the Honors program but haven't decided where I'll be next fall. It's good to read honest points of view from students already in the program. Parents (moms and dads) have valuable insights to share too. And, in my own worthless opinion, helicopters come in both genders.

Honors College sophomore here. Not J School (pre-med) but I LOVE IT. I’ve definitely taken advantage of my honors classes and have enough credits to graduate with “general honors” already, and it’s only been 2 years.

Haven’t seen much benefit for the Honors sections of regular classes, besides for lab sections because the professor, rather than a TA, typically leads honors RSDs (recitation seminar discussion) which is somewhat helpful.

The best part of it, in my opinion, are the small seminar-type classes that the honors college offers. I’ve taken a pharmacology class, a social identities class, and will take a positive psychology class next semester. I had top notch professors for both pharmacology (grant reviewer for the NIH and CDC) and identities (Kemper award winner–Mizzou’s award for top profs) and am looking forward to pos psych (director of Student Success Center and Career Center). I’m also taking honors organic chemistry, which is by far the hardest but most rewarding class I’ve ever taken.

There’s really no reason not to do the Honors College. Its requirements are easy to fulfill and its benefits are numerous, especially for students looking for specialized advising. I’d skip the general honors FIG though, in favor of one more major-centered, because Gillett’s kind of a run-down dorm and not many of my friends have liked that FIG. I did a biology one, though, and loved it. FIGs are great and they only last a semester.

happy to help!
