MLC??

Okay so what exactly are "Michigan Learning Communities"?? Are they good? Bad? Required? I heard that dorms on the hill house a lot of the MLCs, so if you want to live on the hill do you have to be in one? Can someone please explain this to me.

They’re programs that group together people of similar interests, and each is different. Some have a lot of requirements, some very few. Some are residential, meaning that you have to live in a specific dorm. If you’re interested in the topic, they aren’t bad at all, and they aren’t required. If you want to live on the hill, you have a better shot through a MLC but don’t do it if you don’t like any of the topics.

For example, I’m in the LSA Honors MLC; I will live in south quad and have to take certain honors courses.

Okay thanks! Yeah I’m looking at housing options on the hill and everyone just kept talking about MLCs

You can also join one, get the housing, and drop. I know several people that were accepted to honors then dropped out of the honors program after they signed their housing contracts. The same goes for the RC (residential college) and I’m sure the other ones. If it’s a community that’s more specific than the RC or Honors, then you might feel out of place living there but you will get good housing!
Also, if you’re a female and don’t care that much about living with only girls (I lived in a coed dorm and honestly wish I had lived in a female-only one), the female-only dorms are all on central campus, really close to everything!

Don’t apply to MLC simply for housing purpose. If you do not ever plan to be part of the residential program, do not apply. Dropping out of the program right after signing the contract is a very irresponsible behavior.
