MLK Recipient offered no money or scholarship!

D was just notified that she was accepted into the MLK Scholars Program and will be one of 60 first-year students in the program. The offer came after we deposited at NYU. However, she was not offered a scholarship or even coverage of her loans. Has anyone ever heard of this? When she applied for the MLK, she believed it to be a merit scholarship program. I checked the website and the financial aspects of the program have been altered. Now it includes a one time $1,500 scholarship if a student studies abroad and a one time $7,500 scholarship if a student studies at NYU over the summer. The program itself looks wonderful and it is an honor to be selected. But, not gonna lie - it’s very disappointing that she was not offered any money. Is she the only one?

Would love to hear from other incoming MLK Scholars about their awards. Thank you.

Edited to add - D is white and I believe was chosen based on her essay and extensive social justice community service. We were not offered financial aid except for loans.

I don’t know about the MLK program offered at NYU, but I do know that NYU is not the best place to expect financial aid dollars that are not in the form of loans.
It is very well known that NYU is very stingy with their scholarship dollars. I’m sorry that your daughter didn’t receive any real aid other than loans.

If you were not offered anything beside loans, then NYU is unaffordable and is not worth it unless 75k is chump change for you and you can pay that out of pocket. They’re also not treating your daughter right by changing the terms of what she thought would be a scholarship and turning it into something else. Being offered a title and no scholarship money is also called a “chocolate medal”.
Was she admitted anywhere else more affordable?
