Moderately High GPA & ACT - Cal Poly SLO Chances

So for starters, I’m basically screwed if I don’t get in because- even though I really should consider more options- I’m absolutely in love with Cal Poly SLO and it’s literally the only school I actually want to attend. I’m also applying to UC Davis, Washington State (they actually have a good biotech program), Baylor, and possibly Princeton (though I definitely can’t get in there), and then possibly some Colorado schools as safety schools.

I have a 4.08 weighted, 3.81 uw, but a 4.29 according to CSU weighting (10th & 11th grades, only 8 semesters weighted). I took the ACT 3 times and can superscore to a 33 (got a 32 composite twice and a 31 the first time) for my composite; however, I know SLO only looks at your english & math sections. Math was my lowest at 28, english my highest at 35.

I have taken 5 AP exams thus far, and gotten one 3, one 4, and three 5s- however, there was no where to report this on the CSU application?? I sent them anyways so hopefully they don’t just throw them in the trash.

I took/am taking 6 honors and 9 AP classes total in HS. I’m applying for the College of Science & Math for a Biological Studies major- I’ve taken/am taking Honors Biology, AP Biology, and a concurrent-enrollment for a Biotech Engineering class. I’m also taking 2 other science courses this year- in total for all of HS, I’ll have taken 10 semesters of science classes. However, I’m worried on the math side- I’ve only taken/am taking 4 classes (8 semesters) worth of math classes in HS- 2 of them were honors, the one I’m taking now is AP Stat. Also, I know SLO wants 5 years worth of English courses but I only have 4 years worth- though the first 2 years were honors and the last 2 were/are AP and I excell in English classes.
I think my biggest problem is that I’ve never taken any physics or calculus class in HS- am I completely doomed??

The CSU app only let you choose from a dropdown menu of hours for work & ECs, of which I chose the max # for ECs (and checkmarked that I “did have leadership positions in at least one of them”, but only the 2nd highest in work (frustrating because the nature of my jobs means I work different amounts each week so it’s hard to average that out), plus I could not checkmark that “at least 25% of my work experience relates to my major of choice”

Sorry that was a ton, but I’m especially worried that my math courses may bring me down (also my fewer than desired english courses). Any insight to if my ACT/GPA/abundance of science (esp bio) courses for my major may help at all?

*12 semesters of science classes, not 10

Also in the top 4.9% of my class at a highly competitive school.

I’m so sorry to keep commenting (they really should have an “edit” feature on CC!) but I also forgot to mention, I’m out of state (from CO). Also I’m a white female, so no diversity points there.

Look at this thread on post 52. Calculate your MCA and post it here.

Also, class rank is not looked at in admissions.

Your GPA is 9-11 with a max of 8 semesters weighted including only AP and IB courses taken in your 10-11 grade year.

BTW, they do have an edit function, but it only lasts 15 minutes. Look at the top right corner of your post if you want to edit.

Thanks! MCA is 4469 if i calculated it all correctly- thanks for linking the ACT conversions.

I’d say you are a match, had you applied for agriculture school at SLO then it would be a safety.

This will have a significant impact on you because they do not know how well you perform in Math/Science when you have not taken those two “core” mathematics and science, making them unable to determine whether you can really brighten the college as a CoSM major. Note that what colleges take most seriously about as far as grade goes are the grades the applicant received in classes relating to their declared major.

Just realized you’re apply for College of Science and Math, that being said, although your GPA and ACT are very high and if you had taken a physics or calc class I would be shocked if you did not get accept, with without a physics class or a calc class then it would really lower your chances.

Thanks for your input, and yeah that’s what I’m very worried about. Do you think it’d help my chances at all that I applied for biological sciences major (with alternate microbiology) and I’ve taken 3 full years of bio classes, 2 of which were at college level (honors, AP, and dual-enrollment biotech engineering)?

bump

just in case anyone in future years references this thread (I know I spent hours pouring over “chance me” threads for calpoly), I was accepted!

congratulations!

Wait are results out!?!

OOS acceptances are coming out. In-staters who are accepted will probably hear back tomorrow. @ap012199

Congrats kylieb317! Thanks for letting us know-it’s nice to hear good news! What major did you end up applying with?
