I'm confused. If you have received a 5 in AP Bio and plan on taking Mol Bio 214, a spring course, are you allowed or encouraged to take Mol 211 for fall? If not, then what are you expected to take? Thank you

You could either take MOL 215 in the fall (and then skip 214), take MOL 211 (thus forfeiting your AP credit), or take neither and go directly to MOL 214 in the spring. This last option lets you take something else that’s not MOL.

Welcome to college, where you don’t have to take a class in biology (or whatever subject) every semester!

Thank you. Do you know if Mol 211 would be most review from AP Bio? I took AP Bio as a sophomore so I’m not sure if I’ve forgotten some of the more salient details

That’s what they claim, yes. Hence why AP Bio exempts you from the course…

I would say MOL 214 was basically AP Bio over again. EEB/MOL 211 focuses more on the ecological and evolutionary standpoint, from what I’ve heard. You can take MOL 211 if you want, or forego it and take either 215 in the fall or 214 in the spring.

EDIT: Is it sad that the first thing I thought when I saw my post count was “SAT”? (for future reference as I will undoubtedly be posting more, my current count is 2400).

Considering you’ll be a sophomore in college, far removed from those days of yore, yes, it’s pretty sad.

To add to your statement constructively, though, I would say it really depends on your AP Bio class. Obviously some high schools teach more molecular stuff whereas other high schools teach ecology/evolutionary stuff. The Campbell book that’s popular with high school AP Bio classes, for example, is over 2/3 ecology/evolutionary bio as opposed to molecular.

I didn’t hear the best things about EEB/MOL 211-- so I would avoid it if you can. Also, the rest of the MOL classes are all molecular, not ecology etc, so they dont build on 211. The only thing is that if you are majoring in MOL you still need an EEB course, so keep that in mind. Otherwise I would take advantage of the ability to take a different class that you haven’t taken before.
