<p>This thread reminds me of a dear friend from college days. He was pushing off dear old dad, the orthopedic surgeon, and decided to be an English major (my major, too.) Did not take many bio/chem classes in the first four years. After he got his BA he decided that Dad really did blaze the trail for him, and that he really DID want to be an orthopedic surgeon. Dad, who had paid his way through an LAC, said "Fine, but you will go it alone." So, friend went back to UNDERGRADUATE school at his state school, took two more years of undergraduate science courses, funded partly by cleaning the offices of his father's associates, and then on to med school and ultimately to an internship at the Mayo Clinic. What I admired most about this saga was the father's clarity that my friend had made his choice(s) and that there were no more hand-outs. My friend is now one heck of a doctor.</p>
<p>LTS - Perfect story! Should be required reading of every parent. Story and your conclusion says it all.
PS I like hearing from you on topics beyond the one which hadyou so tied up in knots in the "relationship" thread. Thanks for posting.</p>
<p>YULSIE ROCKS!</p>
<p>(What was that Talking heads riff about "Facts?" I'd love to quote it here...)</p>
<p>Can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax
Can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me, I'm a real live wire</p>
<p>Psychokiller, q'est que c'est
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa - better
Run run, run run run run away!</p>
<p>(Psychokiller, Talking Heads)</p>
<p>And here are the complete lyrics to "Once in a Lifetime:"</p>
<p>And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
wife
And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?</p>
<p>Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.</p>
<p>And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.</p>
<p>Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...</p>
<p>Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!</p>
<p>Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.</p>
<p>Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.</p>
<p>And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?</p>
<p>Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.</p>
<p>Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.</p>
<p>Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...</p>
<p>I've just been replaying these lately, as well as The Clash - different era, but sentiments quite apropos these days. I don't bounce as high though when I try to do the Pogo ;)</p>
<p>Yulsie--we are Clash fanatics at our house, too. When my D was in college, she used to sit around talking with friends whose parents brought them up on Beatles and other sixties music. She was the only one who grew up on the Clash, U2, REM, Talking Heads, etc.</p>
<p>I was thinking of </p>
<p>"facts are similar facts are (cool?), facts don't do what I want them to"... from Remain in Light I think...</p>
<p>Garland, I saw REM in October, they were great! Not to mention John Fogerty (I Ain't No Fortunate Son - that time may be coming again) James Taylor (he ROCKED!, and BRUCE Almighty, the hundred year concertmeister.</p>
<p>Excerpts from my recent Clash commuting favorites - </p>
<p>Career opportunities the ones that never knock
Every job they offer you's to keep you off the dock
Career opportunties the ones that never knock</p>
<p>I hate the army an' I hate the R.A.F.
I don't wanna go fighting in the tropical heat
I hate the civil service rules
And I won't open letter bombs for you</p>
<p>Bus driver....ambulance man....ticket inspector
I don't understand</p>
<p>They're gonna have to introduce conscription
They're gonna have to take away my prescription
If they wanna get me making toys
If they wanna get me, well, I got no choice</p>
<p>Careers
Careers
Careers</p>
<p>Ain't never gonna knock</p>
<p>And.....</p>
<p>Ring! Ring! It's 7:00 A.M.!
Move y'self to go again
Cold water in the face
Brings you back to this awful place
Knuckle merchants and you bankers, too
Must get up an' learn those rules
Weather man and the crazy chief
One says sun and one says sleet
A.M., the F.M. the P.M. too
Churning out that boogaloo
Gets you up and gets you out
But how long can you keep it up?
Gimme Honda, Gimme Sony
So cheap and real phony
Hong Kong dollars and Indian cents
English pounds and Eskimo pence</p>
<p>You lot! What?
Don't stop! Give it all you got!
You lot! What?
Don't stop! Yeah!</p>
<p>Working for a rise, better my station
Take my baby to sophistication
She's seen the ads, she thinks it's nice
Better work hard - I seen the price
Never mind that it's time for the bus
We got to work - an' you're one of us
Clocks go slow in a place of work
Minutes drag and the hours jerk</p>
<p>(An illustration of the scenario we hope our kids will never live out!)</p>
<p>Ok, I'll stop quoting lyrics now, I promise!</p>
<p>Saw REM in November, two days after election day--what a weird concert that was!</p>
<p>Have U2 tickets for May; can't wait!</p>
<p>And have seen Bruuuuuuce more times than I can count (grew up in Springsteen country, so it's a requirement, I thnk.)</p>
<p>Current favorite Clash song: "Spanish Bombs."</p>
<p>(think we sidetracked this thread...)</p>
