So I received my acceptance letter, but wasn’t offered any money. I’m really confused because I’m in the top 10% of my class, have an average 3.9GPA and Uconn wasn’t my reach school at all. I did get only 1700 on my SAT, but that’s only because I just moved to the US two years ago. I also took a TOEFL test which is for foreign students and is kind of a score helper for the SAT English part and I scored way above average on that. Many of my friends with low GPAs, average classes and not many EC’s received money, so I don’t understand why I wasn’t offered any money. I did apply to financial aid, maybe that has something to do with it? I’d appreciate if someone could give me a reason…
Storrs Actuarial Science
104 WGPA/ 97 UW
2120 (1410 M + CR) / 32 ACT
6 APs by graduation the rest honors & dual enrollment
OOS 15K & Honors College
Didn’t expect so much money but got a lot!
OOS accepted today got 15,000 per year.
4.0 GPA U.W. and 26 ACT
Unfortunately, the 15k per year looks fantastic but might be leaning towards OSU or UMass.
So, if there was no mention in the acceptance letter, there’s no chance of any merit scholarship?
In State:

Congratulations everybody. It is helpful to know what daughter might be able to expect as her letter is unlikely to get here until early next week.

@tedysmom…I called Admissions today, as I have seen kids with lower stats than my D getting $ and she got none. I was told it does not go by GPA…it goes by rank/%…you must be in top 10% at your school…so even with a 4.2 my D was 13%…a kid with a 4.0 can be in top 10% at his/her school….2nd way to get $ is SAT. Your M & R must be well over 1300…not sure exact #. So in my case where my D didn’t do great on Math, but awesome on reading & Writing is out of luck again.
So UCONN is basically comparing you to the other students at your specific high school, not the pool of accepted applicants? So regardless of your high GPA, grades, test scores…if you’re not in the top 10% of your school, then no $$? Doesn’t sound logical…
@tedysmom I think you misinterpreted a little bit. If your M&CR score is 1350+ I’d say, then you do get merit even if you’re outside top 10%. It actually does make sense for them to do class rank rather than GPA because they can’t possibly compare grade inflation from all schools. With rank, it lets them know how a student is doing within the context of their own unique environment.
@tedysmom & @1600mPenn… both are correct in a way…I was told because different HS use different scales for GPA they compare you within your own school….fair in 1 way…as 1600mPenn states above….but I still feel a student with a 3.8 GPA should not get $ over a kid with a kid with a 4.2 GPA.
If you are not in the top 10% you can still get $ based on your SAT …if your Math & Reading are over a certain number, it maybe 1350 but honestly I recall her saying 1380…then you are eligible for $. Maybe if you are top 10% and over the 1380 you get more $…not sure, but you only need 1 of the 2 to get some kind of $.
