Money ! ! !

I was talking to my friend who currently is living in new rez and is in the faculty of science. He says he is paying about $35,000 a year. I have three siblings; one of which is already in college. Although $35,000 is a fair price compared to most US universities and although my parents have a pretty nice income (guestimating $150,000), $35,000 still is a little more than they were expecting to pay.

-How much will air-flight cost me a year? I will prob drive sometimes too. I live in NJ so I think I will fly most of the times I come home (prob 1-2 round trips a year).

-How is financial aid for international students? I heard it's minimal. Will they throw me a few k's (my parents income is posted above)?

-Scholarships. I don't even feel like I should be talking about entrance scholarships when I have not even been admitted yet. However, I would like to see what you guys think. Here are my stats:

750 math 730 critical reading, 710 writing, 780 math 2, 750 biology, 720 history, 4.0 soph and junior year and a 3.3-ish senior year =/

I applied for the major scholarship, but it seems more likely that I will be seeing $3,000- if anything at all. If, however, they look mostly at my essays and leadership positions more than my senior GPA, I might be in better luck. My essays were very well written and I have a long list of quality EC's. My letters if reference were excellent as well.

Also, I believe there are also scholarships that one can obtain once one starts Mcgill for either leadership or athletics. How competitive are these?

1-you should check with this but i think international tuition is around 15k canadian, and new rez is around 1250/mo x 8 months so 10k. im not sure where the other 10k comes from but from my calculations i get around 25k covering all your food and living expenses (not including about 1000 for books). Go on the website and check if the rates went up.

2-were not gonna do your flight searches for you. new jersey is fairly close so i wouldn’t expect much over 200 one way, bu you can look into that yourself. Also look into the train and the bus, takes longer but cheaper for sure.

3-As of this year the US government is providing grants and subsidizing loans to international universities including McGill (read this, important) [US Student Loans](US student aid | Scholarships and Student Aid - McGill University) Financial is is minimal for any student and scholarships are hard to come by unless you are outstanding. look into the financial aid website, it has a bunch of info. Do the scholarship app, a lot of kids don’t do it so you could get one, but I wouldn’t rely on it because they are few and far between.

5-I don’t know much about the other scholarships. I would call the financial aid office, sorry I am not of more help but i didnt use these services myself.

Yeah, the tuition must have went up because faculty of science is $22,000 (just for tuition). Thanks for the link and all the insightful information. My friend was able to get a $3,000 scholarship with stats a little higher than mine so I guess I will have to wait and see. I am hoping for a miracle. But if a miracle does not come my way, then I think a little debt will be worth the experience of living in Montreal and studying at McGill.

Albeit 11 hours, $60 for amtrak is not too bad

^ I have very similar stats to you, except also a relatively high IB expected score.

Though I was accepted to arts, I received a $3,000 1-year scholarship, and a major renewable scholarship with my ECs. I think you have a good chance, though the major ones are def somewhat of a hit-or-miss.

Another thing to consider - how is your course rigor? Many APs/IBs? That also factors in, in terms winning a 1-year scholarship and what year you’ll be entering in. You could enter as a U1 student (2nd year) if you’ve earned enough credits in high school. So even if you did’t win any scholarship, you’d only have to pay for 3 years of college.

I take the most rigorous schedule out of anyone in my school. However, AP classes are not available until junior year. APUSH is offered junior year and everything else is offered senior year. Up until senior year I took all honors and advanced honors (A.H has the same rigor as AP but cannot be called AP because you do not take the AP test at the end of th year), and the one available AP class (I got a 4 on APUSH). This year I am taking 5 APs (chemistry, biology, gov, lit, and calc) and I am hoping I score high on my sciences.

Btw, how long did it take for you to find out about scholarships after you were admitted?

Wow - I think you have a great chance at admission & scholarship. good luck!!

I found out my decision at 9 am, and scholarship info the same day around 5pm. On the website though it says it could take from 1-2 weeks.

I really hope I find out same day too. I won’t find out about admissions, however, until mid-march most likely. My mid-year report was just sent out today so it will be at least a week until they process it.

Hope to see you in Montreal next year!
