Monologue advice

Can someone list monologues for guys please? A monologue that has brought you success or any well known, anything would be nice. Even a website!

It’s hard to recommend for you without knowing anything about you. It’s also sort of your job to find monologues.

But here are some places to start looking.

  1. Think about shows you’ve been in – you might be able to use something you’ve already worked on.
  2. Look at lists of old Tony nominees, “America’s Best Plays” etc., season theater previews (the NYT has one, also seen them in Chicago) to get a sense of what’s out there. You need to find ones that have young-ish characters like you.
  3. Look at the plays that the schools you’re targeting have done in the past (I’d avoid the ones they’re putting on right now). They often have a lot of age-appropriate roles in them.
  4. Call the Drama Bookshop in NYC and ask them for recommendations (do it off hours, they get busy on the weekend). You’ll need to be able to tell them a little about what you’re looking for, what type you are, etc.
  5. Backstage has a service called The Monologuer, which I have not used but might be helpful. http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/resources/monologuer-find-perfect-monologue/
  6. Think about hiring a coach, either just for monologue selection or for coaching too.
  7. Ask the theater people you know – directors, teachers, fellow actors, etc – for recommendations.

I hope this might be helpful. It’s a list from Marymount Manhattan of monologues they suggest (and ones that are overdone:)
