Help! I have no idea where to start…and I need to find monologues for college auditions. Anyone know how/where to start? Any recommendations?
I have a few suggestions for you:
- There is a store in NYC called The Drama Bookshop. If you google it and "monologues" they have a search function on their website where you can put in things like age, gender, comedic, dramatic, classical, contemporary etc... and it should pull up some possibilities for you. (I don't think we're allowed to put the actual link here but if you google it will you find it). I would read some of the monologues and plays from which they're from and see if certain characters or playwrights speak to you. Keep reading until you find one that really suits you.
- Google videos of past winners of YoungArts awards. There have been some terrific monologues presented in their final performances. Note that typically the theater awards include both MT and Acting performances. But its also a great place to possibly find new songs too! Usually the name of the play is subtitled at the beginning of the performance.
- If you google College Audition Coach (the website of Mary Anna Dennard), she has started something new called Monologue Concierge that is intended to help students find monologues. I don't know exactly how it works but it may be worth looking into.
- Talk to theater people in your community. Directors, teachers, classmates a few years older than you. They may have suggestions for you.
- You may want to consider hiring a college audition coach. There are lots of good ones mentioned on these boards. Most include monologue selection in their services.
Good luck and happy hunting!
