“The desires and other passions of man are in themselves no sin. No more are the actions that proceed from those passions, till they know a law that forbids them.”

I agree with this quote..

Biblically speaking, yes, this is a very true quote. Until God made the law, nothing was a "sin".

However, even without a law, I believe that there is still such a thing as a "moral sin". For example: even if there is no law that forbids killing, it is still a "moral" sin...just because it is morally wrong.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

That's a hardcore quote...got me thinking........

that quote sounds dirttyyyyy.....

Agreed. Basically, what you want to do nor doing it are in and of themselves sinful, unless they breach some other moral maxim.

Could be taken as agreeing or disagreeing with certain major religions.

other way around, if there were no sins, then there would be no laws...eh...

Yea there would be. Even if killing was never considered a sin, I think humans would still hold it in the same light as they today. Or close enough.

^ Why?

Sins and divine laws are both man-made concepts, and thus are subject to definition.

There are moral and immoral actions, however law and religion have absolutely nothing to do with actual morality.

how do you define "sin?"

i guess the question is is there such thing as "innate morals"

actually richard dawkins argues that natural selection is pretty much the only way to create intelligent lifeforms on other planets (at least in the first stage). if he is right, then such other intelligent lifeforms are likely to be social and to have social norms.

however, lifeforms crafted top-down don't need to have such norms (as one can impose other arbitrary measures of survival: one could, for example, artificially select phenotypes on the basis of antisocial personality disorder)

i don't even get it!
