Boston College, to a degree, is preppy as well.

I have to ask…what does the above mean? Is it just too late at night for me to figure it out?

You have got to be kidding! LOL

I never heard of the term “popped collar” until this thread!

Popped collar refers to when the color on, for example, a polo shirt is stuck upwards instead of folded down.

Interesting that all these colleges mentioned are on the east coast (except Pepperdine)

I couldnt agree more. Union attracts a lot of downstaters, contributing to the “nouveau riche.”

When I visited University of Rochester it appeared relatively preppy, but not like Union.

I think the OP needs to let us know if he’s looking for the really preppy colleges (those populated by a large population of kids from prep schools, etc) or the preppy look colleges where there is a sizable middle class population dressing the obvious part of the preppy look.

That’s the parsing. Preppy USED to mean, had gone to a prep school, usually in the Andover Exeter etc. line. USED to be largely East Coast old money. Has EVOLVED to mean certain colors and items of clothing prominent, with a secondary inference to be drawn of political conservatism and religious commitment. Most often found now in the South and Texas. Among girls, high correlation to sorority membership.

SMU in Dallas. Lots of Polo, Louis Vuitton, Lilly Pullitzer, Vineyard Vines, you name it.

I’m a current student, so I’ve witnessed it all first hand.

Agree with UNC-CH. Fraternities are big and the preppy influence follows.
Have lived in NC all my life, had many friends who attended UNC.

S1,an '09 NCSU grad spent lots of time with friends in Chapel Hill over the last four years and saw guys he went to h.s. with who didn’t have a clue about preppy suddenly sporting seersucker shorts.

Most people consider their own school preppy, and it’s probably true that the clothing considered “preppy” is prominent on most college campuses. Clearly, there are certain LACs that act as depositories for the worst graduates of top preps, and some Southern schools with preppy styles of clothing, but I’ve excluded both types of schools.

Universities
- Dartmouth
- Princeton
- Duke
- Vanderbilt
- Penn

LACs
- Williams
- Amherst
- Middlebury
- Colgate

US Naval Academy. They all run around in these identical white suits, it’s unreal.

tk21769–that was priceless! And I’m not sure I agree with ChoklitRain–we live in the Happy Valley, and I’ve never thought Amherst and Williams kids were particularly preppy. Yes, there are a lot who have BEEN to prep schools, but they seem pretty relaxed and not prep-fashion-conscious walking around town. There’s not the “Muffy and Biff and I are jetting to the islands this weekend” vibe.

I would add Trinity in Conncticut and Hamilton College to the list. Both have a strong fraternity presence and a traditional feel in my opinion.

In the Big Ten:

Preppy:
Minnesota
Indiana
Illinois

Average:
Northwestern
Iowa
Michigan State
Ohio State
Penn State
Michigan

Not Preppy:
Purdue
Wisconsin

I would have to agree with Rollins College in Winter Park, Fl

I hate driving through the area because none of them know how to drive their expensive cars. haha

gregb, I’m curious what would their typical car be?

Preppiest I’ve seen thus far would be Colombia. (lots of high fashion mixed w/ Polo, Lacoste, Vineyard Vines, etc)

How is NW NOT on your preppy list, LakeSuperior? For being the only private school in the big ten, its prepiness comparatively is on a league of its own.

@LakeSuperior: Your list is completely bizarre. I don’t have the personal knowledge to rank the whole Big Ten based on actual experience, but I can use some data to produce a more valuable ranking. Since preppiness is usually associated with many homogeneously wealthy students, a school with few Pell Grant recipients would probably have a greater feel of preppiness. Here is a ranking of the Big Ten by ascending Pell %s:

Northwestern University 10
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor 12.9
University of Wisconsin-Madison 13.1
Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus 15
Indiana University-Bloomington 16
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 16.2
University of Iowa 17
Purdue University-Main Campus 17.7
Michigan State University 19.2
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities 19.9
Ohio State University-Main Campus 30.6

1)Auburn University
2) Clothing - guys in khakis, polo, lacoste, topsiders, plaid
girls in lilly, sundresses, plaid, topsiders, pearls
3) I went to Auburn in the 80’s and visited recently - still the same charm!
