Mork Family Scholars

The Mork family has given $110 million to USC for scholarships. Many of these will be awarded to deserving and well qualified students from the area surrounding USC. Others will be awarded to students who have achieved at a very high level from around the U.S. The student indicated in the letter there would only be 20 awarded this inaugural year.

Today on Facebook one of the students from Florida posted he had received a letter informing him he had been selected as one of the Mork Family Scholars.

Previously, John Mork had donated 15 million to the Viterbi School of Engineering.

Another student from Connecticut reported he had received the scholarship.

Add one more from the beautiful state of North Carolina…

are these all incoming freshmen?

Yes. Mr. Mork wished for the recipients to be freshmen.

boo for older people. :(

how much ($) is it?

i figured out-- trustees + 5k. is the selection process same? does this mean there are more full-tuition scholarships available now than couple of years ago. no details on selection on usc website.

me123,
This donation is recent. Students who wished to be considered for merit scholarships applied by December 1 of 2010. Only 20 were awarded this year. A certain number were set aside for deserving and high achieving students from the communities surrounding USC.

Endowed scholarships are paid for by the interest/dividends from the original investment. The total donated is not distributed or there would not be any scholarships past one year.

From what I have read the university hopes to have 40 or more awarded each year. Investments can go up or down. The better return on these funds, the more scholarships will be awarded.

I am guessing next year there will be much more information regarding the scholarships and the application process. I am also guessing these will be in addition to the Trustee Scholarships.

Wisdom, please check out the long list of continuing students’ scholarships. These individuals or foundations have chosen to support upperclassmen/women or graduate students. Each donor has the right to choose how funds are awarded. Perhaps the next donor will specify funds will only be used to support continuing students.

Hahah! I think that comment was meant to mean, “Oh bummer that non-incoming freshman (older people) can’t get the scholarship.”

yes, I did mean “older than freshman,” not that the donors are old! I know there are some scholarships for continuing students, but it seems like the majority of merit scholarships at USC are given out to incoming freshman.
