How bad is the mosquito problem in Houston and/or Rice? I ask because I am living in a foreign country this year (visiting family) and it is really bad here and it has made me REALLY SCARED of mosquitoes... so am curious

Just like anywhere else–The bugs are only a problem during twilight hours

but how bad can/does it get? Like without the repel you’d get 10 bites in half an hour outside?

If the thought bothers you, get the Off wipes you can keep in your backpack or close by before you leave room and use those when mosquitoes come out. It will not be the strangest thing people do.

Neither of my kids ever mentioned mosquitoes being a problem at Rice… My guess is that they were inside during those hours or it just wasn’t much of a problem.

During summer nights there are usually quite a bit of mosquitoes. When I come home from school I try to get inside as fast as I can because if I leave it open for a bit, bugs will try to fly in. (this is my house, not Rice dorms btw)

The suburb I live in near Houston actually sprays in the summer time for mosquitos; I would assume that being where Rice is located that they would also; it is nestled in a quite well to do area of Houston. Not to worry.

thanks for the responses… I guess the best thing to do is see for myself how it is.

BTW is there a really good repellent that is sold in Houston to prevent mosquito bites?

Student is there for an internship this summer living about 10 min from Rice. Has not mentioned any problem w/mosquitoes. It has been extremely hot and dry there–I imagine the mosquito population is pretty low right now!

when it starts to rain, there are many mosquitos. the grounds of rice dont dry all that well quickly. so after heavy rains, some flooding occurs and mosquitoes breed.

it isnt too bad (compared to when I lived in India for a few years) but if you are prone to misquito bites, get some repellent.

My suite keeps a can near thye door so we can use it if we want to go sit outside or something

I hardly get bitten.

Houston isn’t by a swamp, so there aren’t many mosquito.

houston is pretty much a swamp. when it rains it takes a long time for the place to dry up

oh jk, when it rains i guess

The new bug lotions with Picaridin are less stinky and supposedly much less toxic than sprays with DEET, and they work equally well. http://www.picaridin.com/

cdz512… aren’t you an international student? or have you lived in Houston?
I’m just wondering because you seem to give a lot of advice/opinions regarding Houston when I feel only those who actually live here would know the answers. No offense, just curious.

Indeed, there are many mosquitos during a typical Houston summer. But we occassionally have droughts, so they cannot breed as easily = not many mosquitos. When fall starts up and it gets a little chillier, you don’t encounter many mosquitos as they can’t handle the cold. So normally you’ll see them from about May-Sepember, with the summer months being the worst (June-August).

I don’t know about Picaridin, but I’ve always found an effective repellent to be something like Off! Deep Woods, with as much DEET as possible ;)

I am not an international student (what makes you think that?). I have lived in Texas but I am not in living in Texas anymore.

Oh and FYI, I haven’t been giving a lot of information regarding Houston (there haven’t been that many threads about it either). Most of the information I give are about Rice (hence why this is a Rice University forum).

Ah, I see. Like I said, I didn’t mean to offend you (I get the feeling that I did), I was just curious. My apologies. Where in Texas did you live?

You’ve made grammatical errors that appear a bit ESL (although very good ESL! ), such as you did in your last post. “Most of the information I give are about Rice” and so on. That, and I also thought I read in one of your posts that you said you were an international student, but I must have you confused with another poster.

Yes, this is a Rice University forum. :)

I never bother to care about grammar when I type online. It’s quite common that I make mistakes. I’m way to lazy to go back are reread my posts and I simply just put my thoughts down. I don’t ever bother with grammar online because I’m not being graded.
I lived by San Antonio.

Where will you be attending college in the fall, cdz512?
