i've heard plenty of good things about Rice University (academics, campus, friendliness, etc.), but what are some not-so-awesome things about Rice that incoming freshmen and potential applicants might want to know?

Houston is hot and humid.

i agree...i live here.

If it wasn't so hot and humid down here and there wasn't a 2 week winter, I would go to Rice. Other than that it is practically perfect. The tuition is incredible for such a great university.

It's hot, but thank god for air conditioning. And shade (Rice is full of it).

Are there lots of bugs?

Actually I didn't seem to find many bug problems at all. Especially for the humidy, it didn't seem bad at all. But then again my roomate was allergic to something that may have been insects.

The weather and bugs aren't bad enough to write off Rice, though.

I thought there were a lot of bugs down there when I lived there. But I guess you don't get the worst of it until July/Aug, so it should be fine if you're only there for the school year.

And to go with the tuition thing, cost of living in Houston is amazingly low for a city its size and caliber.

fortunately, i'm used to crappily hot and humid weather. anything else? is studying at Rice too stressful? (that's really the only "bad" thing i can think of at this point)

Rice is small.

mosquitos suck especially if you're allergic to them

Rice is small is a bad thing??

That is something Rice prides itself on. Having a small number of people to distribute huge amounts of resources to. Look at the endowment per student. (I think it ranks in the top 5 in the country).

Besides, the president just recently passed a plan to increase the undergraduate size by adding two new residential colleges.

/ by 0 - Things will be stressful around finals everywhere. It is that way at a lot of elite schools. But most of the year, most people manage things fine. If you have the credentials to get in, you should be able to handle the course load fine.

i think rice is too small. i am very happy that it is increasing the size of the student body, though unfortunately (but understandably) it will be a slow process

I can't really comment on how good the "smallness" is, since I haven't started attending yet, but I must say that size is one of the main reasons I chose Rice.

rice studies can and most often times are stressful. But that shouldn't be a bad thing because the profs challenge you. You will learn a lot. It's a very non-cut throat environment. I guess the only bad thing is the weather. ESPECIALLY during O-week when everyday changed clothing like 3 to 5 times a day because it was so hot and humid. But by the September, everything is fine or at least you will get used to the weather.

A lot of Rice students don´t check out everything that Houston has to offer which is really frustrating for people like me who like to get out of the day to day monotony but don´t have anyone to go with
