The Scarlet Letter and The Road…really bad. Just really, really bad.

I’ll say Lord of the Flies. I don’t really see that one as anything special.

Definitely The Scarlet Letter
And anything by Austen

I loved Brave New World! I’m a SF junkie though.

Any of those turn-of-the-century trashy romance novels disguised as great literature, i.e. anything by Jane Austen. The fact that my English teacher (who, in short, sucks) adores Austen is further evidence of her overratedness.

I love Lord of the Flies, Brave New World and the Great Gatsby! But I can write the first two down to my complete fascination with ‘how humanity/civilization works in the future/under extreme conditions’. If anyone liked those two, they should read Blindness by Jose Sarmago.

But back on topic, my answer to the question is FOUNTAINHEAD FOUNTAINHEAD FOUNTAINHEAD. Or anything by Ayn Rand. No offense, but I don’t see how anyone who reads those books isn’t sickened by her hypocritical, faux-philosophical justification of her own scared-little-girl sociopathic tendancies. Haha, as you can see, I really despise her and her works.

EDIT: I also totally agree with whoever said Austen/Bronte etc were ‘trashy romance novels’ of their time. I always thought it was my own lack of literary knowledge that made me put down those books, because they always bored me and romance of any kind doesn’t really appeal to me in books, but ugh, I disliked them as hell.

Gatsby was actually a decent book.

Among other overrated ones, “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison.

TWILIGHT… OBVIOUSLY!
NY Times even hates it. Haha…

AMEN, meghnasridhar, I absolutely detest Ayn Rand’s works. Especially the Fountainhead.
I, also, don’t see what’s so great about Gatsby…there were some bright spots but overall I was disappointed.

Yeah, cause everyone thinks To Kill a Mockingbird is the greatest book ever. . . .

I’ll nominate Moby Dick, because no matter how much you may dislike it, it’s far far worse.

Ugh. Let’s not get into an Ayn Rand discussion again.

The Old Man and the Sea was so boring. And Moby Dick. I tried reading them so I would fall asleep, but they just made me want to kill myself. Horrible books.

Invisible Man was not overrated I do not agree, it may have been painful to read but the message was succint. The thing that made me mad was that Invisble Man was so ignorant and never really listened to the people closest to him trying to give him advice but I guess that’s what the book was based on in a sense he had to be ignorant to come to his catharsis.
While Wuthering Heights on the other hand was funny I didnt think it was bad just not a classic. How could a person appreciate at the end Young Catherine falling in love with her COUSIN can you say incense?

the awakening

speak

I liked Speak, but when I think of it, I wasn’t as great as I felt it was when I first read it.

I am very happy to see that someone has not said Harry Potter (no sarcasm).

As for my two cents, I thoroughly enjoyed Gatsby and Catcher in the Rye. Not a big fan of Lord of the Flies though.

^^Someone will soon, don’t get your hopes up.

The Scarlet Letter = torture.
Instead of spending millions to fund prisons, they should just make convicts read that book.

Lulz, falling in love with your cousin creates a nice smell?

Anything by Jane Austen. Her writing sucks.

Shakespeare, also immensely overrated.

The Scarlet Letter. Really? A full chapter about a damn door or garden or whatever it was, oy vey!

The Odyssey. Ok really? Dude cheats on his wife for 10 years and comes back a hero. ???

Twilight. No explanation needed.

Moby Dick. Ok… kind of a cop out since I didn’t read past the first chapter. But I wanted to retain some of my sanity.

Their Eyes Were Watching God. Ok Nora, you want to write a book to show black culture to a white audience, and you put every conceivable black stereotype in one book, REALLY?

Oh and uh… The Road… is one of the greatest books ever written IMO. Whoever thinks differently can go rot :p.

I’m switching it up, contemporary books

Contemporary books I dislike:
- Sarah Dessen books.
I used to like her when I was younger, but all her books follow the same set up. Jaded, unappreciative woe-is-me girl meets annoyingly optimistic guy. End.

The Hands of Teeth and Forests
Just…no.

The Bible.

Nuff said
