Most Overrated Books?

For me,

1) To Kill a Mockingbird

DO NOT GET ME WRONG, great book, and I enjoyed it greatly. Best of all time though? I respectfully disagree. The writing was not amazingly done, and other books have addressed the racial issue as well. Also, everything is a bit too predictable for my taste. A worthwhile read and eye opening at that? Yes. Best of all time? Far from it.

2) Tuck Everlasting

Yes, I'm putting a children's book on here. I remember reading this in 5th grade and thinking, well, the thought behind this was pretty shallow and the writing didn't particularly interest me. We met the author as well, and she turned it into a talk about how Disney sucked (which was totally true, and totally justified.) I was blown away by her appreciation of the minds of children in general and her thought about them and I definitely agreed with her thoughts on how children should be treated more than anybody else I have met, but the book was underwhelming given the hype.

--
Please, don't bother mentioning Twilight, because 1) People will get very angry 2) It's not really overrated since enough people hate it already. (including me, but I will give my life to see Breaking Dawn made into a movie)

My math textbook: Pre-Calculus with Limits ‘A Graphing Approach’.

The Notebook, or anything else by Nicholas Sparks.

Brave New World. Don’t understand why everyone thought it was so “amazing…”

Everything they make us read for school.

Shakespeare.

How about Pride and Prejudice…

I mean it was just one long conversation that never ended…Yawn…

^ P&P made we want to jab a knife down my throat. Worst book I’ve ever been forced to suffer through.

Romeo and Juliet.

I think My Antonia is so overrated. Willa Cather can barely even write.

Pride and Prejudice

I didn’t think Wuthering Heights was so hot either.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

To Kill a Mockingbird is pretty up there.

Heart of Darkness was one of the driest reads I’ve ever had to endured. The message is profound if you read it a couple times though.

I really liked Brave New World.

While I didn’t love P&P, I understand its appeal and why people consider it great.

Wuthering Heights…holy ****, that book is AWFUL.

TKAM is perhaps a bit overrated, I still really like it though  Good movie too!

I HATED HEART OF DARKNESS. Gosh, the writing was so pretentious…the story was fine, just horrible style.

R&J is definitely overrated. I like other Shakespeare plays better, though I didn’t really love him either…

A Farewell to Arms is overrated.

Huck Finn.

Perhaps I’ll think of more later.

The Great Gatsby and The Scarlet Letter. Both were rather painful to read, especially the latter.

^OMG, yes! The Great Gatsby was terrible. It had no plot.

Also, and this might be too soon, but Catcher in the Rye is overrated IMO. Yes, it was good. But I don’t see how it is the definitive male teenage “experience” book. I seem to be alone in that opinion, though. All my friends loved it.

Dan Brown books. :|

the Scarlet Letter.
excruciating read

anything written by james joyce

I second To Kill A Mockingbird and certain Shakespearean works (e.g. Romeo and Juliet). Brave New World was pretty awesome though.

I’m sorry but I just don’t see how someone could dislike Gatsby. I mean if you don’t like the plot you have to appreciate the writing. It BY FAR the most well written book I’ve ever read. The plot was pretty good but nothing special. It’s the specific quotes that amazed me. I mean there are so many that I can recite from memory they were so great.

Scarlet Letter, though, I completely agree with.

Wait, someone actually DARED to add The Great Gatsby to this list?!?! Shame on you, whoever you are! (I absolutely LOVE that book, in case you haven’t already noticed haha)
