Books That Suck

There's this thread on great books, how about a new one about books that were terrible? I think this would be useful, because one thing I hate is purchasing or renting a book that after a few chapters, is a total waste of my money and time. I hated:

-Tuck Everlasting, just not interesting enough for me to read
-The Education of Little Tree, possibly the most racist, boring, and inappropriate book i have ever read
-Eragon, I can't understand why these are so popular
-The Perks of Being A Wallflower, I guess being the polar opposite of Charlie, but still facing similar problems makes me feel no pity for him, but i do pity those who had to sludge through this story
-Speak, good, but not written in a way most can enjoy

Harry Potter series.

^ I second that.

You sir know what you are talking about.

ok I love Harry Potter, and I sort-of like Eragon and I want to whine about you guys not liking them lol but it doesnt matter, and i'm sure u guys have your own good reasons anyway
i hope nobody starts arguing over these things though...
also it would be nice if u guys explain (if u can) why you didnt like the books you choose, like princessbell did

anyway there arent many books i really despise... only books that i dislike for certan (incredibly stupid) reasons, such as

-Tale of Two Cities (because of my teacher... I didnt care for him that much)
-Night/Elie Wiesel (same teacher^ but also i did not care to read such a depressing memoir though i will agree that it is somewhat necessary)
-catcher in the rye (it was interesting, but i found it too depressing/whiny)
-life of pi (it was a captivating read but the ending was not very good in my opinion... also something the author said in his preceding remarks made me unknowingly not appreciate the book that much- he said something like that he had written another book before that was unsuccessful, and for some reason this led me to subconsciously believe i was reading a book by a not-so-good writer)

thats all i can think of for now

also i know this isnt a book, but i really disliked Song of Myself (from Leaves of Grass) by Walt Whitman...

-The Once and Future King, by T.H. White (what was the point?)

Cosmopolis, by Don Delillo. He is a great writer; however, this book just plain sucks.

Oh, man. You guys are listing a lot of books that I like. :p

I can't stand any Star Wars book. I love the movies, but the novel series are horrible. And I don't like the LotR books, either.

Wow, ilovemath, the books you listed are really good...lol. Everyone has different tastes...

Oh, yeah. And Owen Meany. I hate, hate, hate that book. Come to think of it, I don't like the DaVinci Code, Tale of Two Cities, American Psycho, Death of a Salesman, Eragon, Harry Potter 6, Dean Koontz's most recent books, Flowers for Algernon, and Othello.

i hate books that are smugly self-aware of their own earnestness, daring, and morality, like all the Dave Pelzer books (A Child Called It) and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. in terms of assigned reading, The Awakening and Heart of Darkness had me writhing in pain and boredom.

Ugh, don't get me started. I hate that book, too.

[fumes]

Remember that "Woman/Girl In the Wall" book or something... I HATED IT.

I also hate "The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx, "Ride the Wind" by I-forget-who, and all Taylor Cauldwell (sp?) books.

"Catcher in the Rye" is, for me, a terrible book. I also can't stand LotR books and "The Lovely Bones."

But I do love "A Tale of Two Cities" and the HP series.

I HATE lord of the flies or whatever its called, i read it my freshmen year and hated it....maybe i'll enjoy when im older. And I 100% with the Harry Potter and Starwars book oh and lord of the rings.

My APLit class just finished "Heart of Darkness" - the most boring book I have ever read. The discussions in class were interesting, but I just couldn't stand reading this book. I'd read one page and start drifting off to daydream land.

I have yet to come across a book that I have absolutely despised simply because I appreciate the craft of writers; these writers were good enough to be published (whether or not the publishing company printed their books for popular interest or truly literary force is another matter). Therefore, I have learned to appreciate even the smallest inkling of talent in books. I enjoy reading immensely, and the fact that someone took many hours of their time to literally pour their souls out in words amazes me everytime.

I know many people despise Harry Potter, either for literary purism (I've seen many people who disregard "new" books because they are "nothing" compared to the classics) or for nonconformity. Either way, the detractors of the series completely disregard the time and work the writer gave to her novels, no matter how trite or prosaic the books may be.

Oh my god, you guys are listing 3/4 the books I like, haha.
Personally, I hated
~Lord of the Rings
~The Merlin Conspiracy - Diana Wynne Jones
~Grendel, Beowulf
~EVERYTHING SHAKESPEARE..ugh
~The Odyssey, The Iliad
~48 Shades of Brown - Nick Earls (ohh my god this was HORRIBLE, the most boring thing i ever read)
~The Plague - so freaking boring
~Born Confused - Tanuja Desai Hidler (BOOOOOOOOOOOORING)
~A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man...umm..ew

^
Agree with Shakespeare...blech! Oh, and The Odyssey!

Um. WHAT!?!?

C'mon. You can't hate Shakespeare or The Odyssey/Illiad! That is so not allowed.

OMG my least favorite book are the inheritance series, eragon and eldest

UGH!! i hate them so much i really dont know why they r bestsellers
the author has a crappy writing style and EVERYTHING in the books are ripped off completely from LOTR and believe it or not, star wars.

plus the author is really arrogant. he likes 2 compare his works to tolkien.
