Most Popular Majors

To Admissions_Daniel:

What are the most popular majors in JHU? What is the percentage or amount of people doing a Neuroscience major?

You can find info about the neuroscience dept here:

http://undergradneurosci.jhu.edu/

1 International Studies

2 BioMedEng

3 ...?

I did a search but I could not locate specific enrollment numbers per major. I could put a request in with the Registrar but that will take a long time. What I do know is from experience and past stats, and here you go:

Humanities: Writing Seminars, History
Natural Sciences: Biology, Public Health
Social Sciences: International Studies (#1 overall)
Engineering: Biomedical Engineering

I will say that you should be aware that "most popular major" does not always mean "best major" and this is true of all schools. Actually our most popular areas are also area we are quite well known for, but that is not to say that a program like Classics or Electrical Engineering is "weaker" because it might not be "popular."

As far as Neuroscience, Dirt provided a great link. I also recommend reading Michelle B.'s blog as she is a very involved Neuroscience student: http://hopkins.typepad.com/michelleb/.

Here are numbers from a few years ago (note that freshmen are mostly listed as "pre-major" or "undeclared" and are not counted in the departmental counts): http://www.jhu.edu/registrar/reports/fall03/majorfieldundergradfive.html

Yeah but they do count for Engineering because Engineers can have their majors declared from the start, that's why it looks like the school of engineering is huge.

Actually, engineering students do not officially declare their major until the end of their freshman year. Engineering students do start out as pre-majors in their areas of interest, but formal major selection is not done until the end of freshman year -- and students can still change majors as they become upperclassmen. So there is switching that does happen for engineers, and outside of BME you are not admitted to a specific major as an engineer (you can change your mind).

It is true that many A&S students though are listed as pre-major / undeclared often. The traditional breakdown will be 1/3 engineering students, 2/3 A&S students.
