Most rigorous subjects at Andover

Anyone who is at Andover or is going, just a question or two.

What are the most rigorous subjects at Andover to be taken? I am already going to do AP BC and AB Calculus as well as AP C Physics. Is there any other very difficult subjects that a sophomore can do?

why are you doing AB and BC
that’s kinda stupid…
you should do BC and STATS

im sure their english classes are very difficult

There aren’t really any courses that are significantly more rigorous that others. It mostly depends on your strengths and weaknesses and the teacher. As a lower you won’t have too many options about your classes, and many of them are the same level. Take what interests you, and you’re transition into Andover will be much easier.

If you think you are a hot-shot at physics try out the 630 course–fluid mechanics–in the winter. You can go head to head with perhaps the best freshman at physics in the country.

For lowers: History 340 will destroy you…you could also try for the full year of linear algebra.

Gods_Favorite: Why will History 340 destroy a lower? I’m thinking about taking it in the fall. Does it have tons of homework, really hard grading, or what? Now you’re making me nervous!

hey shore…lol it took a while for ppl to respond to ur ?..im glad u got at least a little bit of help…good luck next year!

History 340 is a lot of work, but most kids who take it really enjoy it, sometimes only after the fact. Dr. Quattlebaum is kind of a legend around campus. It’s a lot of work and and he’s tough grader. The adjustment to boarding school might make it a little more difficult, but take it if you’re up for a challenge.

Ah okay thanks, that’s reassuring. Not that I don’t believe you when you say it’s a challenge, but after all I decided to go to PA because I wanted a challenge. Dr. Quattlebaum was actually my dad’s housemaster once, so I guess they’ll have stuff to talk about come Parents’ Weekend.

So should one not do AB and BC Calculus? Had no idea…

Okay, so Statistics, BC Calculus, AP C Physics, History 340 and the Relgion/Philosophy class. Anyone know a tough religion/philosophy class?
I’ll take fluid mechanics and linear algebra later.

So basically the toughest courseload I can take as a entering sophomore is:

AP BC Calculus
SAT German/2nd Year German (Not good enough for AP yet)
English 200
AP C Physics
History 200 - Hopefully move to 340
Gym
And an elective. It says the electives are art, classics, computer, music, philosophy and religion, theatre. What would be the hardest elective course that is not art, music or theatre (Not my strengths).

Thanks everyone and good luck to bball prep and everyone as well.

thanks shore ur so sweet…btw i was going to apply to Andover but decided it was WAY to big for me…small town girl…lol…good luck to u with all those hard classes…im taking big risk:im doing acting!!omg, its gonna be funny to c me trying to act…lol..<3

Good Luck to everyone else!!!

Yeah, I’ll try a production or two as well. But I just don’t want to risk a bad grade on my transcript for Ivies. I’m very cautious, lol. Admire the acting classes, it takes way more guts then any AP subject lol.

The religion and philosophy courses are all pretty good. Mr. Hodgson is tough, but a great teacher. He teaches Proof and Persuasion (heard good things) and a couple upper level courses (I really enjoyed my class). I’d try for one of his courses if you can. It can be difficult to get into upper levels as a sophomore, but the lower levels are good too.

Keep in mind you will generally only take 5 classes a term, sometimes six (requires permission). If you move up to History 340, you will not be able to take gym or relphil unless you decide to take six. Also, you will have to take art and music at some point since they are required.

Your parents aren’t sending you to boarding school to take the toughest classes you can take. You should take what you enjoy, maybe have a social life.

Try something new?
Pick up a new sport

Boarding school is a place of opportunity, take advantage of it.

ohmg im doing volleyball in the fall!! omg its gonna be a sight to see…lol

^omg srry spelling mistake

Yay! History 340 Graduate here! Actually, it broke my heart to leave that classroom. The class single-handedly destroyed my lower year GPA, and I’ve never seen so many people groveling for approval at one time – only to get the same mediocre grades over and OVER again. That being said, the teacher is a legend, and with good reason. Totally nuts, totally brilliant, totally worth it. Though, I’m not going to lie, I did start crying during one of the tests. But that was mostly the Russia. I’m miserable at comprehending post-Napoleonic Russia. Oh, and the AP. Shudder.

My lower winter, I was also taking Proof, which would have been easy if it weren’t for the stupid all-nighter I pulled writing the 14 page paper. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth – but that might have been coffee.

Other tough classes: Mr. Barry’s math class in ANYTHING. I took his Calc class this past term. Oh GOD. Genius teacher, makes me love math even though I hate it, but no one in my class ever finished a test in time. Chem 580 - extremely scaled because, for example, the fall term exam average was a 62.
