just wondering, which US uni do most singaporeans end up at? I'm talking about top 30 unis.

Off the top of my head - Michigan and Cornell.

yeah...tat's bout it. U Mich n Cornell

what type os singaporean students usually go to these 2 schools? I'm asking in terms of grades (A-levels and sats), cca involvement, jc?

Cornell: Usually with perfect A level certs and S papers. Mostly Rjs. They don't really care about cca from what I've heard. AAAA DD A1 2300+ is what they want.

U Mich: decent grads. ie.(AAB) (ABB) (BBB), cap/vice-cap, sports ccas. Represented by all the JC, cept the really new ones like MJC and Innova JC. Over-representated by the top5. Fir my sister's year (1983). There were a couple of Rjs, fair bit of Nj,Tj & Vj. 1 SRjc.

Well, going to these 2 schools usually means going for a US education and hanging out with Singaporeans/Malasians. That really defeats the whole purpose of a US 'all-rounded' education.

Yeah, Cornell and Umich.

Eh, it's not that hard for Singaporeans to get into Cornell. With above average prelim grades like ABBB (A lvls hardly matter coz they come too late), average SAT scores (>2100 will do) and decent essays and CCAs (though yeah I don't think they care much about these), you have a shot at Cornell. You might not be a shoo-in if you got AAAA DD A1 (prelims) 2300+ and a list of CCA credentials to boot though, because Cornell knows these people are unlikely to enroll. One of the most outstanding guys from the recent RJ graduating batch got into MIT and Caltech but not Cornell. Go figure.

It's ridiculously easy to get into Umich though, I remember one year RJ clocked a 98% admission rate at Umich (with the remaining 2% being waitlisted), but lately the admission rate fell probably to slightly below 80% probably coz Umich knows that such a high admission rate doesn't reflect well on its selectivity - and hence, desirability. You just need decent SATs (and most Singaporeans' SAT scores are more than decent) or if your SAT is subpar, good grades. I've a friend who's the mugger type, got only 2060 SAT and 4As2Ds but got into the HONORS program at Umich. So yeah, it's really not hard to get in. You definitely don't have to be a cap or vicecap of course!

O well, I got waitlisted with 2140. Sis alumni makes me a legacy. And i'm a vice-cap.

Oh... you're just unlucky I think... one of those whom Umich chose to waitlist instead of accept to exert its selectivity...

hmm if a sibling is an alumni... does that make one a legacy???

yes, it does.

gosh i hope i don't meet a whole bunch of singaporeans and malaysians in Umich...i mean, it's kinda cool to see countrymen and all, but that's not why we go to America, is it? ;) might as well stay back.

what do you think the admission people at michigan look for international kids? say, grades, ccas, comm service? or do they just look at the school, see RJC and assume that whoever is in rj MUST be great and accept?

also, when you say MANY rafflesians get into michigan, what exactly are the numbers?

anyway, banedon, despite the many singaporeans in michigan, you should still go! i mean, you still have so many other non-singaporean friends to make. i would think that the experience there would be SO much more eye-opening than one at a local u.

eh from what i know singaporeans in umich tend to hang out with singaporeans... the singsoc there is a tightly knit bunch. more likely than not, you will find yourself hanging out with your singapore brothers.

unforuntalely that's what i dislike about singaporeans and malaysians. they tend to stick to each other even in america, i just find that amusing that they even want to go to america in the first place.

i guess one thing you could do is NOT join the singsoc lol. this way you wont be binded to your fellow countrymen.

y not? I might just get to become presidet of SSA. Good for resume.

of course i won't, i'm not singaprean! :D but i think every singaporean should join the association. even for those like-minded me. it's for singaporean, after all.

But what do I do? I am in love with a Singaporean girl. I tried joining the SSA (Students of Singapore Association), she tells me her parents would not like dating her an international student from France. Are all Singaporean parents like this? What do I do?

HAHA. are you for real? sorry but this sounds so... surreal. but yeah i guess singapore parents are a little more anal? being asian and all, they would rather their children marry near home. afterall, which (asian) parent would want to lose his/her kid? and um... joining ssa? aint ssa for like, singaporeans?
