Most Structured and Least Structured

Thank you, Benley. I, in fact, did not say that. :)

I DID say:
In boarding school, where the bar is so much higher and the equivalent of straight As is rare, I don’t expect quite that standard but I do expect decent grades and very high effort. If my kids were challenged with learning difficulties, my expectations would be different but I would expect them to work to the best of their abilities, but that isn’t the case.

leanid, It depends upon the school if there is pressure or not. In some middle schools, you really just have to show up to get A’s. I suppose I DEMAND good grades from mine as well, but that’s because they put no effort into it. Part of the way I don’t make rules, if that makes sense.

In other words, yes, my kids are expected to get straight A’s - because they don’t study. AND, I’m not going to make them study as long as they keep getting A’s. Now, if I see a B coupled with the usual lack of effort, there will be consequences. THEN (and only then) will I come down on them. If it was difficult and they worked hard and got a B, I’d say congrats!

Does this make me a pressure mommy?

neato - Gee, either you have total geniuses for children (since they get As without studying) or you have a horrendous school.

Re: “Seems like an awful lot of pressure to DEMAND high grades, irrespective of a child’s competence.”

Is my usage wrong here? To me it means that at whatever level of competence, to demand high grades is too much.

The school is pretty easy.
Over 40% of the students in 8th grade have over a 90 average.
When I say that we have no local options, that’s why!

Neato, it must be neat to live in Lake Wobegon, where the kids are all above average.

That’s the running joke!!! If it wasn’t such a disservice to the kids (all of them), it would be funny.

Neato, my mum demands I get straight As too because I don’t study, can’t remember the last time I did homework (serious but its only 10% of the grade :D), get little sleep and complain about how boring school is. The irony is I actually go to a ‘very good’ middle school whose high school is nationally ranked and where only about 10%ish get straight As… If I were to start getting Bs, I’m sure my mum would put more rules in place but curently there’s no reason to complain.

And yes I know if I get into BS I’ll have to make adjustments…Big adjustments… No more 6 hours of reading a night on school days :(

BlueRaven: its the same for me, except my middle school is average and not “very good”

It’s supposed to be very good… I realised that looked like I was showing off which I really wasn’t, pretty much everyone on here is very bright anyway and part of the reason I do so well is I came from an academically intense private school before here and because of school year differences by law I had to repeat 6 months. I was just saying that like the parents said, I have very little academic structure because I don’t need it. If i did my mother would enforce it on me.

I better start the 4 week project thats due tommorow ;)

^^
lol 10char

@blue same situation here

Correction: My mum DOES complain when I leave things till the wee hours of the morning they’re due.

haha, my mom just makes me go to bed at 11 every night, regardless that I don’t get home until 8:30 and eat/shower and start homework at 9:30

that’s her only request she says

what will I do in hs?
