Mount Sinai Humanities in Medicine

^Not true. I know people who applied with no science whatsoever (and got accepted), because you can talk general chem/bio AFTER fall of sophomore year. The app is due October 1st. I also saw nothing on the website that said you have to take Orgo Chem no later than spring of sophomore year. Do you have a link to where it states that is a requirement to take Organic Chem no later than spring of soph year?

And for those students on the quarter system, they could easily take orgo Spring quarter and still apply fall quarter, after having been accepted. The program also looks at your high school record as far as science goes.

No, you apply the summer before sophomore year. If you’re lucky, you interview sometime between november and early december during your fall of sophomore year, and then hear back around the winter holidays.

Nowhere does it say you need to take orgo in spring of sophomore year. Thus, you don’t need to have taken bio or chem either. Granted, you’re correct in saying the chances of being accepted without any sciences is poor. But when I applied (for example), I had a year of calc and a year of chem/lab on my freshman transcript only. sure, they saw i was signed up for bio/physics for my fall of soph year, but there were no grades attached. i’m curious to know where you get your info about this program, blue, and i’m sure it’d help future applicants to know your sources as well.

just wanna bump this thread up. i made an acct and tried to access the application today but it isn’t up. is it just me or are you guys experiencing the same thing?

I don’t think the app is opened yet…I would try again mid-week.

anyone else get access to the application yet?

nope…

I’m almost positive that the 3.7 GPA, 1440 reflects accepted students. The way the website is worded is a little confusing, but someone from the program mentioned at an information program the stats of accepted students being that. It would be extremely impressive if those numbers represented applicants.

As far as science classes are concerned… They are looking for indicators for success in medical school. They probably go through a checklist like this 1) is the person interesting, and the kind of student that we want to have in our class? 2) have they shown predictors to be successful in medical school?

They suggest that SAT scores are good predictors. After that they are going to want to see coursework that show likelihood for success. This could probably be a combination of AP science classes and college science classes. I believe that accepted students have varying degrees of the premed curriculum completed.

the entire embark website is not working still. is this true for you guys or is it just me? don’t know if i should call them or if its still too early…

If you read the website, applications will be posted by July 15th, so I wouldn’t recommend calling before that date, just my opinion though!

Yeah I would expect that it will be sometime this week.

Oh alright thanks, I thought it was july 1st.

anybody else notice that they added physics to the requirements??

“1 semester of any college levels physics or one year of high school advanced or AP physics.”

i took honors physics in high school…does that count?

Can you guys please help? The application instructions request official SAT scores, but they also say to NOT have collegeboard send the scores directly to Mt Sinai because Mt. Sinai does not have a code. My high school doesn’t have my official sat scores and my college says they cannot release them. I called collegeboard and they said they cannot send official scores to my home. The instructions mention that “A photocopy or web shot of your SAT/ACT scores is also acceptable” but the only scores online are the ones on my unoffical score report. Any suggestions? I’ve been scambling around to try to get everything in order but I’m at a loss now. Any help would be really appreciated!

I don’t think that they mean official as in it’s in a sealed envelope from College Board. They said the scores on the high school transcript are sufficient so I’m guessing they mean “official” like you’re not just putting the numbers on the application but you have some evidence (in which case the screenshot of your scores on the College Board website would be fine). If anyone could confirm, that’d be great.

does anyone know when they will start inviting people to interview?

^SDN Mt. Sinai HuMed 2012 thread has someone reporting an II on 10/6.

what is SDN

SDN= Student Doctor Network.

There are a number of open discussion forums devoted to the many facets of medicine.

Sorry for the shorthand, thanks for your help WOWMom.

I would link to the thread but it’s a violation of CCs Terms of Service. You can find it if you google ‘SDN Mt. Sinai 2012 HuMed’; these threads are a good way to keep abreast of what’s happening during the current cycle.
