We are realizing that we cannot get the extra recommendation on the SAO applications, which is important to DD.
For the schools that accept both SAO and Gateway, can we just remove those schools from SAO and add to Gateway, if the math/english recs have already gone out? (In gateway, we can submit a new email address for the math teacher, for instance, but now does that math teacher have to re-type in the whole recommendation AGAIN? it looks like it’s a whole separate request, and I don’t see how to link it with the previous requests.) does this make sense?
Is it a supplemental recommendation? If so, schools will usually allow the writers to send those either directly to the AO or to a general admissions email address. My son had supplemental recommendations and I gave the writers the email addresses and asked that they write his name and birthday in the subject line. We only used SAO, and as you say, there is no where to upload extra recommendations. That may be easier than pulling a school off SAO and adding it to Gateway.
I doubt (but don’t know 100%) that you can get a rec from one into the other.
However, I totally agree with just emailing it straight to the AO. That is absolutely fine and happens all the time.
We had highlight videos and were told to email them straight to the AO because “the system often glitches and we can’t view them” if they are just uploaded in sao or gateway. So clearly AOs are used to getting emails with app supplements and that’s just fine.
Now I’m curious, is it possible to move a school from Gateway/Ravenna to the SAO?
@mondaydevil – Just to clarify, I really meant “delete” from one portal and then “add” to the other. Of course, you can’t really move from one to the other. Also note that I hadn’t paid yet, so that wasn’t in play. But all that said: you can remove, and you can add. The problems that I seemed to come across:
- The new application (the "added" one) would not be linked to the previous ones in gateway, which made me worry that DD would need to ask her recommenders to re-type in again the exact same recommendation in Gateway. (but note the schools DO seem linked in SAO, as all the schools are automatically linked in SAO and it doesn't seem like you can undo that, which presents its own issues for us outside of the scope of this conversation. But in any case, this doesn't seem to be a problem if going from GW to SAO, thus).
- If the Gateway recommendations have already been submitted and sent to the school X and you move school X to SAO, the school will get a second recommendation -- the one from SAO -- and it may muck up your application that they get both a gateway and an SAO recommendation from the same teacher. Probably not the end of the world, but seems messy.
- If you've already paid, then I would imagine you would lose your money.
@dramakid2 and @one1ofeach Super helpful. Extra recs will just get submitted separately. thanks.
