I know that this year's move-in date is Fri. Aug. 22 and that the official programs end Sat. Aug. 23 but I'm wondering whether most parents will leave Sat. afternoon/evening or stay until Sun. Aug. 24 (need to purchase plane tix). Does anyone know what most frosh do on that 1st Sat. night? Hang out with roommates/new friends or with their families?

I know at least there is a meeting with the RA that evening. I can’t remember if there is the option for an organized activity, I don’t think so. I think everyone just starts getting to know each other. I think the first organized activity is the boat ride at the end of the first week.

If I am interpreting your question correctly, most parents pretty much part ways with their kids by late afternoon Saturday, if not sooner. At that point they need to start integrating themselves into dorm life. Now whether the parents go home Saturday night or stick around to enjoy New Orleans for themselves is a mixed bag I am sure. And probably a few have breakfast with their kids on Sunday, I suspect most don’t. The students are getting to know their roommates and floor mates, and those first days are important for doing so.

We left that afternoon after convocation. We moved D in right away when they opened the dorms that morning, made a trip to Target and BBB, had lunch, and then were pushed out the door. We drove, so it didn’t matter exactly what time we left. I think if I was flying, I would leave the next day unless you want to spend more time in NOLA by yourselves. I think most of the freshmen are anxious to make new friends and get adjusted before classes start on Monday and prefer not to spend the weekend with their parents.

Ballerinamom, I’ve just returned from orientation. What a wonderful job they did! It is all orientation and move in are coordinated by Penny Wyatt. Since this year’s move in is a day earlier than they have done previously, it might help to ask her if there will be anything planned for parents on Sunday.

Thanks all - that’s really helpful info!

I think the info said that anything for parents would be done by Saturday afternoon. My husband and I decided to stay till Sunday morning to have a night in NOLA.

The only exception in the past was that for DHS winners (and maybe PTA winners?) there was a lovely breakfast Sunday morning. With move-in now a day earlier, I don’t know if this will change.

Thinking ahead here…for students that participate in Explore NOLA, they get to move in early- will they have access to boxes that are sent down via Fed E or will they have to wait until actual move in day to retrieve those?

As best I can recall, they still have to wait to get to those boxes. I don’t think they even move the FedEx trailers into place until that Wednesday. I haven’t heard of anyone going to the FedEx warehouse and trying to retrieve boxes separately, and I think that would be tough for FedEx to do since everything would be staged for move-in day.

That’s what I figured, just want to be sure we don’t Fed Ex anything he will need immediately .

Exactly.
