Move-In Day is Tomorrow

my roommate and i have had a plan to buy a cactus or two for our room since a few months ago!! maybe it is a smith thing. smith has kind of become an outcast portal but i plan on being a portal rep this year and changing that - it helps that i know 1/2 the people living in smith already. our main agenda is repainting the lounge as it is dark green - nice in the day, creepy and cold at night... want me to find out if the guy living in your old room is cool? haha.

anyways apparently the activities fair is postponed (boo).

I'm having a hard time meeting other first year students, and it's kind of getting me down. The Block Party got rained out. I didn't know about a dance at O.Hill? Anyone go? Was it fun? I guess I'll go to The Crawl tonight.
I like Brown, but I worry about missing out on the First Year experience. Advice anyone? I have a real nice roommate. We're both OOS and a little lost.

Sure. I wish I left some sort of graffito in the room. (Yes folks, I spelled that right. Graffito is the singular of graffiti.) Oh well.

Back when I lived in Smith, it was weird because the officers of the Catholic Student Assocation and the Queer Student Union both lived there.

jimmyjam - you won't have a normal first-year experience, by selecting brown you've pre-selected that. there's a lot of chances for you to get to know your first year peers though, through the first-year events the next few days, class, and parties. The first week or two the first years are very open and willing to meet everyone because they're all in the same boat as you.

you just won't be in those big groups the first years are traveling in right now as they go from orientation event to another, giving them a chance to get to know people from their dorm.

"I'm having a hard time meeting other first year students, and it's kind of getting me down"

Good luck. I've been there.

try being a transfer =P my advice? just say hi to whoever, and make plans and stick with them with people. it will be much easier when classes start, as then you can say "man, what a fun/crummy/wierd/stupid class this will be! i'm starving, want to grab a bite?" or whatever other cheesy meet-and-greet line.

Shoebox,
I like your advice! I checked out O. Hill today, and though it was after lunch that I went, it looked nice/huge/and with better food options. At least at Brown, I'm one of the few folks with internet connections. Go figure!
I'm going to the Crawl tonight at Newcomb. Brown has it's advantages, but I feel so isolated. I'm really a fun person. The rain kind of screwed things up orientation wise. Thanks for the input. I'm glad I know you all!

i'll be going to the crawl too. followed by some raging.

jimmyjam, check out various fraternities, don't be afraid to walk in even if you dont know anyone. Some brothers may let you in for a drink or two. Or you may run into a brother who is looking for a beerpong partner.

OK, naive question>>I don't know what raging is? I can guess, but want to be sure. I'm a sheltered gal from the deep south, and can be dense at times.

raging = rapid alcohol consumption

i never knew parties are so intense here before last night...

lol

well im not at the crawl, but I heard it was kind of fun and kind of lame. My day was taken up with pointless activities, and the convocation. blah. Tomorrow I have a placement test a 8 freaking AM...

I also definitely ate dinner (very early) in the Brown room at Newcomb. It was really cool.

and jimmy, you have to be plusoutgoing in your situation like shoebox said. Meet some people in Old/New dorms and go hang with them in their suites or halls or whatever. That will go along way, Im sure all of the guys in my suite would love to meet you (not in a wierd way, just in a 'holy crap i dont know anyone here, i need to meet people' way) and I think the same goes for about every other first year here including myself. I havent been able to meet very many people cuz ive been locked up in my room, so im kinda in the same boat.

and for the record, if someone thinks its wierd you start talking to them, or like looks at you funny, forget them. If they arent trying to meet people they are NOT the kind of people you want to meet anyways.

good luck. i'll have to talk to my associate dean about doing 18 credit hours this semester. Gerrans just emailed me today and said i was admitted to his waitlist of Organic Chem, which is 6 credits. Have to again switch and add/drop classes and return books. :(
and then I'll have placement test in the afternoon too.

Brown is awesome...the scavenger hunt was pretty fun.
Sadly, our group couldn't get anyone to streak the lawn or the tunnel.

People streak the steam tunnels? That's a little extreme even for me.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to get burnt in any of wrong places.

"i never knew parties are so intense here before last night..."

where did u go?

Brown does seem pretty freaking awesome. I will be mooching off of all events that I can manage to get into there. i wish I could have made it to the scavenger hunt last night.

Soooooo who else enjoyed seeing b2c speak at the little play thing today. It was kind of cool, ridiculously over-PC, but the skits were kind of cool. Some of them made me feel like 9th grade health class though.
