I was very happily surprised at how smoothly the move in was at Lincoln Center yesterday. Last May, the street was all cut up with construction, and only two cars could back in near the entrance to move out. But it was all restored, we got a spot that became available just as we pulled up. Plenty of carts. Security directing traffic. Someone running the elevators. Even a gigantic sandwich in the lobby that was for anyone who wanted a bite to eat.

My daughter likes to have her bed raised as high as it goes so she can store things underneath, but the bed was low so she put in a work order and they already came and raised it for her. That was quick.

DD has a single this year and she is thrilled. Helped her unpack and hang up all her posters before we went out to eat and left.

One of her classes got cancelled on Monday, only 5 students had signed up for it, so she had to scramble today to find something else.
She will be interning at a theater, starting next week. She is so excited!

How about for the rest of you? How was move in?

The street was restored? When my daughter moved in on the 18th the street was a mess, so they must have fixed it up quickly. Even so, on the 18th move-in was also a breeze.

I’m talking about 60th Street. There was room for at least 10 or 12 cars to back in. Last May, there was room for only two.

Me, too . On the 18th of August there was only room for two cars to back in.

Wow, that’s amazing! All the big holes and wood fences that closed off the street were all gone. The street was totally in one piece. All open in front of the McMahon entrance. I mean, there was still scaffolding around and stuff going on further up the street, and it was bumpy and cut up, but it was clear in front of the doors.
I remember in the spring, I was able to look underneath the street into the big trenches they cut open.

Move in went just as smooth at Rose Hill also! I’m a new parent, my daughter is in Martyr’s Court. The best thing was, on Facebook, they gave the correct address to use for your GPS, which helped tremendously. I’m a Bronx native, now living in the Mid Hudson Valley, I only know how to get there by public transportation, so this was my first time driving there!
You pull into the Southern Blvd entrance and the parking lot was divided up by residence halls with announcements telling you to stay left of the cones for your hall. Cheerleaders were at each sign welcoming families. We found Martyr’s and were greeted by a student with water, an administrator with water and then one of the Fathers (it wasn’t McShane, but just as funny and welcoming!!) and we followed the signs and people directing traffic to the correct hall. We got to Martyr’s and they gave me instructions to back in, they asked for my daughter’s name and got a big cheer of “Clare’s HERE!!! Woo-Hoo!!!” and they just unloaded my pickup. One girl was wearing a ram cap and everyone was very helpful and cheery. One of my D’s friends arrived at the same time across the way at Queens Court, so we got to hear his enthusiastic greeting from the NSO volunteers. I was then directed to take my pickup to the parking garage and a cart would bring me back to Martyr’s while my D got checked in. Parked the truck, and I walked back, since it was such a nice warm day. One thing, everyone gives Martyr’s a bad rep. They are average size rooms and there is AC. On the warm days, my D and her room mate are very VERY comfortable. We let Fordham choose her room mate and they hit the nail right on the head. They bonded instantly and are great friends now. My D went into Fordham knowing a few kids already so she introduced her roomie to them and they all hang out together, even went to the football game last Thursday in a huge group.
After setting up the room we got a bite to eat at The Marketplace which wasn’t bad. Had the Italian sliced roast beef with gravy, potatoes and green beans. My D right now is loving Auntie Anne’s. We went to Fr. McShane’s welcoming speech which was even more poingnant for me since I grew up in the same neighborhood as him. I left around 5:30, my D was going to watch Mass from her friend’s dorm room in Queens since it overlooked the Mass and I gave her a big hug goodbye. I went in a mess but left feeling good and knowing she was in a good place that has been a good fit for her. They redid her schedule after meeting with advisors (do this, talk with them, they will help you and point you in the right direction!!).

So far she is loving Fordham.

That’s wonderful Mom!!
They really do make a big deal for the freshman, they do that at Lincoln Center too, with the water bottles and announcing their names over the bullhorn, balloons everwhere, and yes, my favorite, unloading the car for you!!
Next year, you are on your own… at least at LC…

Glad to hear the roommate experience is going so well and that she’s happy in her dorm room.
My daughter was a little jealous when she read that RH is getting an Auntie Anne’s but then decided it’s better if it’s not at LC, she’d be tempted every day…

And, I am always a mess when I leave…
Keep us posted on how her year is going.

Funny thing about the dorm, all you hear is how horrible Martyrs is. We did a tour when D was a junior and he showed us Queens and pointed to Martyrs and said “You don’t want that”. Not for nothing, the rooms are standard dorm sized. Larger than my co-worker’s relative at Wharton. The added plus is the AC. When we went to admitted students day in April (not the big one one the Sunday) we had another tour, this time Alumni South. D loved it. She didn’t get that but a friend did, but is in a converted triple. At move-in, the girls across the hall from my D are in a converted triple so their families came over to see how a double was set up and I went with room mates parents to see the triple. It’s tight, but do-able.
She’s having a great time and liking her classes. I’m much more relaxed now knowing she’s ok.

I’ve never been to RH, I wonder why everyone thinks Martyrs is so bad. Having control over your air conditioning is a great thing. My daughter’s AC didn’t seem to be cooling off the room and she put in a work order and they came the next day and installed new insides.

I love how responsive they have been so far.

I think they must have made a big push to open up the space at LC right before the big move-in days. My daughter went early because she was doing some training for orientation and it was tight, but not terrible since not many were moving in that day. The staff was really sweet and helpful-- it was all smooth and easy. :D
