Move In Day - Tales from the Front

OK, first thread I've started:

School? Grinnell

Move in experience? Awesome. Keys were distributed right on time; we were instructed to back our car up to the dorm entrance and a team of 8 or so red-shirted upperclassmen had our car unloaded and everything in DD's room within 5 minutes. At most of the entrances volunteers staffed hospitality tables with buckets of iced bottled water, coffee and OJ.

What went back home with the folks? Halogen Lamp - (forbidden -- fire hazard)

What did S/D buy there? Window Fan, push pins, floor lamp & lightbulbs (to replace the halogen lamp,) gatorade, cereal

How long did it take to get dorm room set up? amazingly, just a few hours for three girls!!

What was forgotten & needs to be mailed from home? Water Polo Ball

What comfort items did parents surprise student with? 3 pounds of chocolate; notes hidden around room

Family Activities? Formal parent activities began early in the afternoon with counterprogramming as part of new student orientation scheduled concurrently

Cafeteria experience? Saw lots of upperclassmen loading plates with bacon & broccoli spears for breakfast...must be on Atkins

Best Line overheard on campus? "I learned to throw a Frisbee in France!"

Bonus Question - Did you actually meet anyone you've virtually met from CC? I met "MIZSIC" with whom I've been conversing since our daughters (both water polo players) were trying to choose between Grinnell & Kenyon. My daughters (who have personnally met virtual friends from Xanga and now Facebook) think I'm really weird.

Please feel free to add more questions/observations

Juana

What dorm is your daughter in? My S is the SA on Reed second.

One suggestion -- If there's something special a school does on move-in day, don't spoil it by giving it away here in advance! Let everyone experience it fresh. I'm being vague, BTW, because I don't even want to name schools that I know have something up their sleeve for incoming frosh.
