questions from a new Muhlenberg parent

There hasn't been anything posted on this thread for a long time, so I thought I would try to get things going again.

We just returned from the freshmen registration day at Muhlenberg. It was very well organized and full of information (at least for the parents).

To parents or present/former students:

When do the freshmen find out their dorm and roommate assignments? Also, what were the logistics of move-in day?

What should my son bring to furnish his dorm room? Are there any necessities/niceties that you would recommend?

How difficult is it to juggle a sport with academics?

What was Orientation like for the students?

Do you have any advice for a freshman?

They told us that we get our dorm/roomie assignments in late July, the same time we get our email addresses and etc.

My mother told me that they told her that we need to move in at like 7 AM, and parents just drop kids off then leave, but I'm not sure if she was joking or not... I hope so, or at least about the 7 AM part...

Move-in day does start pretty early, but there are current student volunteers and some alumni volunteers that help move everything from your car/minivan/uhaul into the dorms. There's some time to get settled and then a nice picnic lunch before parents head out. So, the 7 am part is true, sorry :-)

One frustrating thing I found about Muhlenberg was the late arrival of dorm/roommate information... like an earlier poster said, late July.

So that leaves some holes in the shopping agenda. There are just some things you don't want to go out and buy (AND haul to school) if your roommate already has it. But if you wait until too late, many stores might be out of that item, or have limited choices.

We live very far away, and knew we wouldn't be back on campus until Parent's Weekend so we kind of cheated when it came to parent's leaving. While we were helping D settle in her room that morning, we created a shopping list. After lunch, when they went to their orientation activities, H and I went to Target to grab a few last minute items. She had a short break later in the afternoon, so we returned to campus and delivered the last of the items. We said our goodbyes then, went back to our hotel room and left the next morning.

I will give you an important piece of advice - if you plan on coming for Parent's Weekend, make your hotel reservations now, if you plan on staying overnight.

We cheated too. I think no matter how many lists you make and how organized you think you are, there are always things you forget or didn't know you needed until you see the room. We left to pick up the extra extension cord, long cable for the TV, food for the frig ect. and came back late afternoon with the goodies. I would highly reccommend staying overnite after the move in as it is emotionally and physically exhausting.

Move in went very smoothly. Lined up about 7am and waited our turn. Once we arrived at the dorm about 10 upperclassmen descended upon our car and unloaded it within minutes and delivered all items to the room. Make sure everything is labeled with name and room number. First thing you should do upon arrival at the room is figure out which phone line is yours. We made this mistake and set up the entire triple, moving and lofting beds, moving wardrobes and the last thing we did was plug in the phone and it was not the correct number.(There were three phone outlets in the room) We had to purchase extension cords for the phones and run them under the rug.

Can't help you with sports questions.

Advice for freshman.....get involved with clubs and activities ASAP. Much easier in the beginning.

The freshman dorm rooms are on the small side so don't bring too much stuff. Definately talk to your roommate and bring one frig, one microwave, one tv. There is not room for two of everything. My dd shared the iron, ironing board, drying rack, fan amoung other things.

Except Brown, which is the only all girls dorm on campus. The rooms are quite generous there. Not many girls list it as a first choice, but once they're there and can appreciate the generous room, they learn to love it.

True, Brown is the best, but OP has a son.
