Move in help

Smooth move in today. Weather was perfect. We opted to make two trips with our hand truck from the Nebraska lot and skipped the long line of cars waiting to unload.

Yes, our move in went smoothly today too. Much smoother than I expected, and yes the nice weather certainly helped. Not too many cars lined up at Hughes when we got there - we drove up to the curb in front of the building within 5 minutes. Plenty of upperclassmen were there and they were more than eager to help us carry our stuff upstairs. The whole process of getting everything upstairs took just a few minutes. Very well organized. I was impressed. The only glitch was that the micro fridge was left out in the middle of the room because it wouldn’t fit in the cubby (there was a permanent shelf that was bolted to the furniture which prevented the micro fridge from fitting where we expected it to be). Other than that, I left there today feeling very good about my son being there and feeling very comfortable that he will enjoy his experience at AU.

No helpers apparent when we arrived at 3. But we were able to drive right onto campus and pull up near the dorm. No wait for the elevator, but we were glad we brought our own hand truck.

The over-the-bed shelf contraption we brought didn’t fit. Nor would a floor lamp if we wanted to tuck one by the head of the bed. The door to the room wouldn’t close if anything were to be placed so that the bed was not flush with the wall. We tried rearranging the furniture but there was no solution.

I’m sure the helpers were worn out by 3:00pm. They were working quite hard. But at least you didn’t have to wait for the elevator, because at 11:00am there were consistent lines to get on the elevator. We took the stairs whenever possible, but that was a bit tiring.

We took advantage of being local to run back down to AU today to drop off a couple of things our daughter decided she needed. We noticed there were helpers outside the dorms today as well. We were thinking perhaps most upperclassmen decided to skip the madness of the first move-in day and were arriving today.

(Note to future AU parents: That overhead storage in the dorm built-in storage system is waaaay far overhead! Even at 5’7", my daughter asked us to bring a footstool so she could get things in and out of the overhead cabinets and shelves.)

LR4140, where did your son wind up putting the refrigerator?

In our daughter’s room, it didn’t fit in the compartment that is intended for it and her roommate’s family (who’d arrived earlier) had taken out some shelves and hoisted it up to eye level on top of the shelf it was supposed to be underneath. I had heard from the people who rent the refrigerators that the micro-fridge doesn’t fit in Hughes because there’s a fixed shelf (instead of an adjustable one) and that it was necessary to detach the microwave and put it somewhere else, but as long as it was plugged into the refrigerator, it was o.k. to use.

I’m wondering if they ordered new refrigerators that are a smidge taller than they used to be and now none of them fit? Or did my kid just get the lucky refrigerator (hers isn’t a micro-fridge, just a refrigerator/freezer) that didn’t fit in the compartment?

Deskpotato - upperclassmen are supposed to move in this Wednesday - or later - unless they receive approval to move in earlier because of. Leadership position within a club, a sport, or special circumstances. My daughter lived in Hughes last year and the rented microfridge did fit. Maybe each rooms built-ins dimensions is slightly different?

NJ Mom, your daughter may have just gotten lucky with her microfridge. On Saturday when we discovered that our son’s microfridge didn’t fit, I talked to someone at the Hughes front desk and she gave me the indication that all of the rooms have that permanent shelf unless someone had broken it in the past. With the permanent shelf there, the microfridge cannot fit. So maybe someone had already broken your daughter’s shelf before she moved in last year. Or maybe they have increased the size of the micro-fridges this year.

LR4150 - maybe the broken shelf! This year we bought an Igloo refrigerator with a separate freezer door. Around 129 at Walmart. Ordered on-line and picked up in a Maryland store. Fit with room to spare. She will use microwave in kitchen on floor.

I am going to have to tie myself to the mast like Odysseus passing by the sirens to keep myself from meddling in the arrangement of this dorm room! It sounds like it could be possible to locate a refrigerator that would fit (getting several shelves back in the process!) and possibly to re-arrange the desks and bookcases…

BUT…it’s.not.my.room.

Must…restrain…self.
