"move in week"...

Can someone tell me more about this? My son is gone from the summer touring with a youth music group and will not be back until the day before classes start. Will he miss anything vitally important?

I have sent a couple of emails to USC and haven't recieved a response.

He’ll be missing Welcome Week ([Carolina Welcome 2011 : : August 13, 2011 - August 19, 2011](http://www.sa.sc.edu/cwevents/)). I doubt there will be anything really important, it looks to me like ‘fun’ things to get to know your classmates, maybe learning about clubs or some university services, plus fraternity/sorority recruitment.

Meh. I went through the list of events with my father and he was like …“So you don’t need to get there until August 18, right???”

Your son will just miss out on a week without classes to meet people, make friends, and eat free food. lol

If I were your son, I’d give his roommate(s) a head’s up that he wouldn’t be there until the day before classes, because I think most people tend to hang out with their roommates the first week…

is your son in the honors college? i remember there being some significant activities for them during that week, but i could be remembering McNair and Carolina Scholar activities.its mostly fun, and a chance to get used to the campus and start making friends. Your son may want to consider preordering his books if he wont get there till the last minute, and it might be wise to let the housing staff know his arrival date so they know he will eventually 'show up". You’ll probably get a better response from housing closer to the move in time…early August?

No honors college. I think his biggest concern is if they have any type of marching band camp. I read that they will be doing a different show for every game, thats very unusual and something they have never done before (usually 3 different shows - not 6 or 7). It’s possible that with a unique show for each game, they will be really simple and thus no need for a band camp. I dont think that there are any home games until late september, so that also might be eleminating the need for a band camp.

We’ve inquired about this, filled out the form to get on the music dept email list, filled out the app for marching band, registered for the class etc. Even directly emailed the director of athletic bands. the funny thing is that they sent out mailers a couple of weeks ago recruiting people for marching band. Seems like they would make an effort to let people know whats going on.

Yeah I got the letter about marching band.

When I asked them about it on Scholar’s Day, they did say there would be a marching band camp, but I think that was before everything changed, though, so I’m not entirely sure about it.

If you look here: [University of South Carolina Bands](http://carolinaband.org/events/) There’s nothing mentioned about it, so I have no idea.

Although if you look here:http://carolinaband.org/athleticbands/carolinaband/</a>
It says:
To become a member of the Carolina Band, you must:

• Attend our Pre-Season Camp
• Be enrolled at USC or one of the area community colleges for Fall 2011
• Enroll in the class (MUSC 123)

And seeing as how it says Fall 2011, it does look up-to-date.

The last time I sent them an email, I used that exact same “to become a member…” quote in the email.

But it really doesn’t matter, he can’t get there til he gets there so I guess there is no point in worrying about it.
