My D will be an incoming freshmen in August. USC has advised us that she would benefit from being there from that date. I am thinking that we will fly from Idaho August 16, shop August 17, move in August 18, have a day to resolve problems August 18, after which I will fly back August 19. Does this seem like a good schedule. What are others doing who are coming from far away? Thanks.

3 nights seems fine
don't forget to rent a car from the Columbia airport if thats where you are flying into, unless you are flying to Charlotte and driving from there? How many connections do you need to make from Idaho anyway???LOL
I sent you a PM about other stuff.....

As much as you won't like it, she will be ready for you to leave after three nights. There really isn't much to do after Sunday convocation anyway. We arrived Friday morning and had an early move in, shopped some Friday afternoon and evening and again on Saturday. We spent Sunday doing odds and ends with only a little interaction with D (departmental reception/meeting for parents and students) then she was off to convocation and rush activities. We had dinner with parents of a girl D went to HS with. We met her Monday AM for breakfast and headed out of town. You might want to check if there is a departmental reception on Sunday and decide if you want to attend. Ours (Sports Management) was a nice buffet, beverages and a chance to meet the Dean, department heads and some faculty.

If the schedule is like last year the first sorority rush event is Sunday night, there are activities at Russell House and other places for others. The gilrs immediately start forming friendships and want to begin to enjoy being in college. Just as PAmom, my wife and I were leaving their room late Saturday evening the two girls started jumping up and down and hugging and screaming..."we're in college!!!"

My D and I have a rocky relationship at times. She wants to be independent. I'm actually looking forward to her getting away, because I think that the independence will facilitate a better relationship.

If I fly to Charlotte I have only one connection, but it's two to Columbia from Boise.

Oh Gosh, I didn't know OSS can move in later than August 18th??

carolccw- classes don't actually start until later, but your d will want to be there from the start. There are activities to welcome the new students and she will want to get used to the campus and meal plans and everything before she has to worry about class. Plus everybody will be making friends those first few days so it will be easier.
Sorority rush begins right away as well, so if that is something that interests her she will need to be available for that.
The first week was actually fun! Good luck.

carol
freshman dorm activities will start right away on the 18th, and convocation is the 19th so you'll want D to be there. You can also request an early move in on the 17th using a form on the Housing main page, which is what we did last year coming in from NY.Its usually upperclassmen who diont move in until later on.We're arriving on the 18th to move S into his Woodrow apt but he really doesnt have much to do (soph) before the 23rd.
