Moved-in!

My wife and I returned home from Columbia yesterday and D2 has moved-in! For future parents/students, I would like to make the following observations:

As a result of Geezermom's good advice, we arrived early for move-in (at 8:45 a.m.) at Schurz and there were already a few parents/students unloading their vehicles. I would repeat what Geezermom said: Get there early as we noted that later on in the day, things got very busy.

Mizzou did not send out a packet to students this year with move-in instructions; rather, they e-mailed a link to students with instructions, including parking directions. Be sure to have your DS/DD print this and bring it with you.

Hotels were booked solid (we stayed at the Hampton Inn that is right off I-70) with incoming parents/students and while we were checking-in there were people coming in asking if there were any cancellations because they could not find a hotel room.

Prepare your DS/DD for a small, but functional room. The "double" room that D2 was assigned was small, with very little storage space. We found that the plastic under bed storage boxes worked very well.

All-in-all, move-in and unpacking took close to three hours. Students were able to check-out carts to bring things into the residence halls, making move-in very easy. We did not have a long wait for elevators to go up/down.

We did not need bed risers. The beds in Schurz were adjustable and we were able to get them to their highest level (over 3 feet off the ground), creating plenty of space.

We got DD a small 22" television, and we hooked it up to the cable outlet in the room and there were over 60 television channels available. I noted, however, that there were several parents/students that had boxes with much larger televisions (32" +).

The stores in Columbia were not as bad as I thought that they would be. We had to make several runs to Walmart, Lowes, Target and Staples and they were all not totally full.

D2's journey at Mizzou has started and she seems very happy. She had made contact earlier during the summer with her randomly assigned roommate and they seem to be very compatible. I have to say that Mizzou really has their act together when I compare D2's and D1's move-in experiences. Everything went smoothly and there are a series of activities/meetings that are designed to help new students acclimate to their new environment.

I’m glad to hear it went well, MSMDAD. Today we were out near a university in our city and realized it was move-in day there. I was nostalgic as I watched two parents in a restaurant giving their D quite a few random hugs. I hope your D makes good friends and loves Mizzou like our S did.

I miss our trips to Columbia. Sometime I’ll send you a list of good restaurants for when you visit. I always tried to score a room at the Hampton Inn next to the stadium–and succeeded quite a few times!

M-I-Z!

Geezermom (or any other Mizzou parent/sudent), please do share your restaurant list in Columbia. During move-in, my wife and I went to an Indian Restaurant and it was terrible. We will be heading back for Parents Weekend and would love to check-out good restaurants in Columbia. I must say, though, that we enjoyed the pizza at Shakespeare’s.

Here are a few suggestions:
Sycamore–on Broadway downtown, my favorite (need reservations)
Flat Branch Pub–5th Street downtown
Taqueria El Rodeo–authentic Mexican food, really good (805 East Nifong, in a strip mall)
Ernie’s–downtown, great breakfasts
Lucy’s–more great breakfasts downtown
Stadium Grill–in the Hampton Inn near the stadium
Sophia’s–Providence Road, mostly Italian

Have fun! I remember that Family Weekend felt a little early freshman year. It seemed like we had just moved him in!

Hooray for a good move in. My son is a junior/senior. (He changed his major too far in & is now on the 5 year plan.)

We’ll be down for Family weekend also. We’re not staying overnight, however. I checked back in June and not a hotel room to be found. This has been the case since they moved to the SEC.

We also like the Hampton INN and one of the Super 's off I-70. It is newer, has a fireplace reception area and very clean.

My son lived in Discovery freshman year and loved it. The rooms there are a bit bigger and they have semi private bathrooms. He has lived off campus the past few years. He lived 2 years at Campus Lodge and this year moved to Copper Beech. Both have shuttles to campus. (Both also recommended by Geezermom  )

Welcome to the Mizzou Mom and Mizzou Dad club. It’s a great place to be.
