Question: Does William and Mary have a campus movie theater, like JMU does?

Is the Music Department good at all? Do they put on any performances, and in what hall?

Any visiting concerts or performances, and how often? I'm talking about from classical music performances, to popular bands and groups, to comedy performances, etc.

I went to W&M in the 80's, and I don't recall hearing any classical music performances back then, but they did bring some major bands to W&M Hall (the Police, the Pretenders, Dan Fogelberg, Alabama, etc.)

My son is coming next year, and I hope some of that still continues. I hope there is even more.

Thanks in Advance...

Congratulations on your son’s acceptance! If he takes a look at the school website, he’ll see that W&M offers many performances each year in a variety of venues, from PBK Hall to W&M Hall (for the really big attendance events) - comedy, all varieties of music, dance, theater, etc.

There’s a department of Film Studies that hosts film festivals as well as offering both a major and a minor. Festivals are held in the Kimball Theatre in CW - a very easy walk (and practically on campus). There are also two new movie complexes at shopping centers near campus, one of which (on Richmond Road) I’d consider to be in walking distance if you don’t mind a hike.

The Music Department is strong and offers many performance opportunities for students, and also sponsors an acclaimed concert series in Ewell Hall: [William & Mary -*2010-2011 Ewell Concert Series](http://www.wm.edu/as/music/performances/ewellconcertseries/index.php) And I’m sure that students can tell you about more contemporary music offerings.

Your son might also start reading the online version of the Flat Hat ([Front Page | Flat Hat News](http://www.FlatHatnews.com)) to see what’s going on culturally at W&M.

there is not a campus movie theater… sometimes they show movies in the Sadler Center, or host “screen on the green” in the sunken gardens.

There is a student group called Alma Mater Productions (AMP) that brings in lots of entertainment, from concerts to comedians. There is usually a big concert in the fall and spring. When the weather is nice there is “Fridays at 5” on the terrace where you can hang out and listen to music.

The W&M student groups put on concerts all the time. The Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra put on multiple concerts each semester at varying locations, sometimes in the Sadler Center and sometimes at PBK. The choirs also do this. There are a couple jazz ensembles and a jazz combo that also do performances.

The Ewell concert series is a good link… if you are looking for W&M to be a location for a traveling professional orchestra to have a concert… it won’t be.

There are acapella (sp?) concerts Wednesday nights at 10pm at Wren.

It was just announced that The Roots will be playing our inaugural Charter Day Concert in February and generally AMP brings in one big concert each semester. Other have mentioned additional concerts put on on campus throughout the year. Our student music ensembles (the Appalachian Music Ensemble, the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble) etc put on regular performances as to smaller groups ranging from student-run quartets to senior recitals. Tons of opportunities to get involved with and listen to music.

The Virginia Ballet is also hosting the Nutcracker on campus. Sinfonicron (our student-run light opera company) puts on an operetta every January and our Theatre Department puts on four mainstrage productions, one of which is generally a musical. No shortage of concerts and music opportunities. for sure.
