Hello,
I apologize if this is in the wrong section of the forum, as I am new to this forum.
I hopefully plan to attend a community college in Los Angeles this August, although I’m not quite sure where I stand…
First of all. I used to live in California around 2009. Left overseas but graduated from an American Program high school. I’m a US Citizen, born there etc etc.
I plan on studying mechanical engineering.
Although my GPA wasn’t that good in my highschool. Was hoping I could have a chance to redeem myself in a community college, go for honors, go to a reputable university like UCLA, UC Berkley etc.
I’m capable of doing so I just didn’t have California in my mind when I started high school…
I was debating between Orange Coast College & Pasadena College. Any advice for a fellow looking to return to California? Particularly in my scenario?
Also. I have a 2.9 High School GPA, Santa Monica College (which I would like to attend) needs a 3.0, I plan on applying today or tomorrow. But is it possible I can get accepted off a 0.1 difference?
Use assist.org to check each college to see who has all the transferrable courses you need. That’s what really matters most.
Depends on your situation. A CCC isn’t worth the hassle anyway. Just go to CCC that accepts anyone with a diploma.
Sounds like you’re over 18, how old are you? All community colleges should accept you – you just apply. If you’re just returning, you will probably be paying nonresident tuition. Contact an advisor at any of the CCCs you’ve mentioned to determine your residency status for tuition purposes.

I’m currently 19, graduated June of last year.
I already expect to pay out of state tuition. Hopefully it shouldn’t be that difficult for me the first two years.
I just need to know with a tick under minimum requirement if it’s possible to be accepted into SMC.
I also have a few other colleges in mind that I can get accepted in, but I prefer SMC because I have family in the area and will most likely want to rent nearby.
Sounds like you will be dependent on your parents for most of your 4+ years in college, including transferring. That will mean you will be paying nonresident tuition all those years, regardless of the fact that you are a US citizen and lived in California previously.
You’re not considered an international student since you’re a US citizen and don’t need a visa. So there are no GPA requirements that I can recall for US citizens who have finished high school out of the country. You just apply as a new student.
ETA SMC is fine. Renting will be very expensive.
