Moving in day--best time to show up?

For those of you who have 'been there, done that,'

Son will be moving in wed 8/25. I think it goes on all day? Is it generally better to show up earlier in the day to get in the 'car line' or wait until late morning or even afternoon to get in line? Does the line usually take some time? He won't have a lot of stuff so we're not anticipating taking a long time to set his room up. Thanks for any info!

The students will greet you en masse and help unload the car - their goal is to move the cars along and they are very efficient! We arrived mid-morning for AMR II and waited a brief period to get to the front of the dorm. Once you have unloaded you can take all the time you want to set up although there are parent and student things to attend during the move-in period. Still, I think you are better off getting there earlier than later so that you can settle in then attend the activities planned.

Get there as early as you can. What dorm is your son moving in to? I was in AMR I, and the process for the AMRs, A, and B will be different than Wolman because it’s across the street. When I moved in, we drove down a fairly short line, one of the volunteers took me to get my JCard and stuff like that, and by the time I got to my room, all my stuff was already there. Very efficient.

When I moved in (5 years ago) and when my sister moved in a few years ago, we got their pretty early (about 10-15 minutes before the official start time of move-in) and it worked out really well. The student volunteers unload your car and take the student to get checked in and pick up their keys while the parents can park, and either drop by the parents reception or head to their child’s room to help. Since we got their early, our boxes for delivered to our rooms pretty fast and we were able to get settled/setup before roommates started to show up.

He will be in AMR I.

I guess we’ll just plan to get there just before the start at 10am. Not really anything else to do anyway as we will be in the area night before ;)

Thanks for the info. Didn’t want to get there at the busiest time and wait in line for an hour or two.

Hi Op,

If you guys are going to be in the area the night before anyways, I would suggest for you to get there early - 15 mins or so before the scheduled move-in time so you can be first in line. From our experience last year, later in the morning and early afternoon tend to be the busiest. I think that’s because folks from areas within driving distance (e.g, Philiadelphia, NY) are arriving by then.

Also, if you guys get all the move-in stuff done early, you can attend all the sessions scheduled for Wed and Thursday. When we moved our daughter in last year, her move-in day was Friday, and it took us until Sunday afternoon to get her dorm all set-up, and we missed a number of sessions that I wanted to attend. Granted, she is a girl and have a total of 6 large bags/suitcase that we need to unpack. We also needed to go to Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Office Max, and Costco to get a lot of stuff.

Good luck, this is an exciting time!

OMG! I think I’d pass out at about Walmart. I am planning one trip to Target (looks like it’s not too far?) and otherwise he’ll be on his own.

Good point about people driving down that morning. One advantage of having to fly across the country!

Hi ihs76,

As I said, I have a daughter  I think boys are a LOT easier. My daughter has a large bag for her shoes only and another suitcase just for her accessories and such!

Anyways, yes, Target is not far. It is about 10-15 mins from school in the Towson Place (I think it is about 5-6 miles away). Walmart, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and I think Staples (or something similar) are also there. It is really convenient. Since we are also from across the country, there is a lot of stuff we didn’t pack (e.g, bedding, storage bins, office supplies, etc.) and waited until we got there to buy. Hence, the trips to all these stores. Have fun!

This will be our first year off campus…remember that Hopkins does not provide housing for juniors and seniors! A little scary given recent events. So far we have learned that he has no lock on his door - ugh - and that we may need to hire 5 people to clean - haha. I have assured son that no lock means he is returning home with us - hopefully it will be fixed by our arrival. Well, I think Target is not that close but it is doable. Last year we found many things out of stock because there are several colleges in the area - all relying on Target - during move in weekend. You need a car or the bus service to get to the malls in the Baltimore area…FYI for parents moving in on the weekend of the 20th - it’s restaurant week in Baltimore…!

Re: Boys are a lot easier except as the Mom you feel more responsible…but, yeah, they don’t care what color the sheets are…

The Towson Target is quite close and about 20 mins from campus so easily done. Also, there are Zip Cars on campus I think for students who wants to get stuff after they have arrived and parents have gone.
