We will be traveling from Texas via plane and will rent a car and need hotel. Any suggestions as to where to stay to have access to shopping (BBB, Target etc)? Any tips on move in day and any local restaurants to try.
Congrats on coming to Hopkins soon!
There’s a Walmart, a Target, and a giant mall (Towson Town Center) close to each other about 20 minutes from campus. I would not recommend staying there because it is super suburban and not walking distance to campus nor exciting.
I would recommend staying next to the JHU Carey school of business in downtown inner harbor for more excitement (still have to drive to campus). There are tons of good restaurants (seafood, sushi, ramen, fine american, and other eclectic food options) right next to the business school. You’re also within walking distance to Whole Foods, clothing shops, Little Italy restaurants etc etc for convenience. Would recommend Tio Pepes downtown for great Paella if you like spanish food. Check out a place called Brewer’s art for great craft beers and food too.
For staying near/across the street from campus, I would recommend the The Double Tree Inn at the Colonnade which is a nice hotel. You’ll be across from the lacrosse field, and there’s a nice restaurant downstairs (called One World Cafe) at the hotel which is vegan oriented. There’s also a chipotle right off campus for convenience. A brand new tasty Ramen Restaurant called Peko Peko and a nice restaurant called Gertrudes (try the crab cakes) at the Art Museum next to campus are also solid options.
In either scenario, you’ll have to drive to get supplies at the Walmart/Target. There is a shuttle that will take your student to the Towson Town mall everyday if they forget stuff later as well. And ofcourse, there’s a mailroom for Amazon care packages as well too.
Moving day will be a breeze. Seniors will be there to move everything from your car up to your child’s dorm room. You can park your car and let them do the work…=). All you have to do is unpack after the moving is done.
Wow! @stevensPR I couldn’t have asked for a more thorough post. I’m going to see if we can get reservations at Tío Pepe’s- paella is a favorite. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. We are excited to be a Blue Jay family.
