I heard that moving into housing on the day the dorms open is very hectic and I already know parking will be difficult. Can anyone with dorm moving experience give me any tips?

Do you unload everything first and move your car? What can I expect?

Best advice anyone can give you is to RELAX. There’s over a 1000 kids moving in during the dorm movein days. I advise not to move in the morning of the first move in day (the 18th). Move in towards the afternoon 4’ish. Parking shouldn’t be too much of a problem, it wasn’t when i moved in Fall of 09’. Just park close to your dorm.

You get the keys, and get your parents (or make some new friends) started on moving majority of your boxes to one place near the elevator if you aren’t on the 1st floor. That way you dont need to make return trips to the car. I usually get the keys, while my mates help me move the boxes towards the elevator. If youre luck you’ll be able to move your boxes mostly in the elevator, then take them all out in the main place of your dorm floor, so you dont need to make up and down trips. It’s the easiest way to move your stuff in.

I’d highly recommend moving in on the evening of Thursday Night. Many people will be moving in on Wednesday because it’s day 1, while many others will be moving in Friday or Saturday because it’s weekend. Thursday tends to be the most quiet day; especially if you check in during the evening. Besides that, it’s hot as hell up here in the afternoon.
