Where to park on firt day dorms open

My child will be living in Reynolds and I am not sure where to park in order to move her things into the dorm room. There is a street directly in from of the Reynolds Hall entrance, but I'm not sure what the name is, or even if we can park there for drop-off. Please share your experiences for the newbee..

Thank you,
Go Noles!

You will get instructions and a time in the housing packet. Relax, you got a couple of months.

^All I got for summer was a letter with my room and roommate. Parking is a complete pain on these move in days. During the summer, I came on day 1 thinking there would probably not be a lot of people… I was wrong. I will most likely come up on the Saturday of move in week for fall. The closest parking garage is “garage 2”, but it’s a long walk if you’re carrying a ton of stuff. I’d recommend just parking right outside the building, have one person stand by the car (to avoid getting a ticket) and have everyone else just bring the stuff in.

When I moved into my dorm, a LOT of people were parked illegally in front of the building. I parked in the garage and just carried the stuff, so I’m not sure if they were ticketing people or not.

Also, you can get a dolly after you buy the social fee card which is offered to you right at check in. Not sure how much it costs for Fall (it was 5 for summer), but it’s something pretty much everyone gets.

Good Luck!

It will be crazy on move in day. You do not have to move in the first day the dorms open. For fall they open on a Wed–prob at 9am, and you can then move in 24 hrs a day 7 days a week after that. There is no time that the desk in the building is not open. You won’t get anything in the mail or by email about moving in.

I suggest you move in in the afternoon or evening on Thurs or Fri. Even Sat. It is not as crazy. Walmarts are open 24 hours for dorm supply runs, etc.

Students will tell you you can can park anywhere and they won’t be giving tickets on during move in days. That is so not true. We watched even whole lines of cars unattended cars get tickets. The best suggestion is to pack in boxes and suitcases so you don’t have alot of loose stuff. Unload it onto a grassy area all in a pile, go park a car legally and come back and take it up to the dorm. No one is going to take your stuff. Leave your D with the stuff and park. If you want to risk it, don’t park on the street anywhere where it says no parking. Park up on the grass in places you see other cars parked. But leave your flashers on, and as soon as the stuff is out of the car, move it. There are lots of parking garages. AND when class is out, many faculty spots are available. You will see signs on faculty lots that say parking is allowed after 5 on weekdays and all day weekends, this applies all day when classes are not in session.

Be prepared to be patient on move in day. And if it is raining, you will get frustrated. That is really only when it gets bad. Remember that the elevators will be busy. The dorm office will have hand trucks, but they have 2-3 not 100 of them.

The local Walmarts and Target and Bed Bath and Beyond were very well stocked last year. And being from South Florida, we were amazed as the friendliness of everyone, esp at Walmart. The employees were excited the students were back, the residents of Tally seems to enjoy watching the annual tradition of parents buying dorm stuff. We had people just smile and welcome us, and we had two different folks ask if we needed help in the parking lot. That doesn’t happen at our Walmart.

Good Luck. And if you can’t park close, let your D do the walking!!

PS if she is going to rush, the dorms open for those registered for rush at noon on Monday, and yes they can move in early and the RA’s are already there. It will be a bit crazier because the girls are all anxious to get in, get moved in, and get ready as rush starts that afternoon. And once they start, they go 4-5 hours the first evening, and come back tired. Be prepared for the fact that once rush starts, they are busy and tired at the end of the first 4 days. You just have to get moved in, do your best, and say goodbye. She will be fine.

The street in fron of Reynolds in called Convocation. When I lived there my mom and everybody else parked right in front of the Reynolds on that street. No problems with tickets at all.

They don’t give you a ticket if you are with your car and not causing any trouble. They gave me a paper that explained the parking rules during move in too.

Even if you get a ticket, paying 20$ is better than having to walk all your stuff a long way imo.
