D might want to move off campus next fall. I see that there are two housing fairs: Fall and Spring. She had planned to come home the weekend that the fall one is. Is she out of luck to find housing if she misses this and plans on the attending the one in the spring? She will probably put her name in the hat to stay one more year on campus but she would want to live with her roommate sinces they get along really well. I'm trying to figure out her best options in getting decent housing for next year and not be really far from campus. Any experiences out there on how to best search for housing?

Rental season starts around October for the following school year. Meaning, students will start lining up apartments for next school year a few weeks from now. And for some of the more in-demand places, students will actually camp out in line to make sure they get first dibs as soon as the application period opens.

So if she waits too long, she may have few (if any) good choices left.

If she decides to try and stay on-campus, she can request the roommate assignment she wants - so if she does get a room assignment, she will have the roommate(s) she wants.

While the downtown apartments will continue to go quickly the overall rental market has loosened up quite a bit this year. Four new student complexes just opened with a total of over 3000 bedrooms; some were not fully rented at the start of classes. Most are some distance from campus but offer bus service and more amenities than the older places close to campus.

Thanks for the info moms! I’ve made D aware of the ordeal that is off campus housing. Her and her friends are in the Arts and Arch area in North and would like to be near this location (like beyond Park Ave). It looks like most of the off campus is off West College Ave. Is the area beyond Park Ave more residential and students don’t reside there? D is a design major which means spending late evenings in the studio having off campus close to the North hall region would be better than walking across campus to get home.

There are a handful of “single family homes” that are student rentals just north of campus (on both sides of Atherton) but not many. My son lived in a duplex on Edith Street, about half a mile from campus off North Allen Street. It is a much quieter part of town than the area off West College or downtown, with fewer people out and about at night. While it might be closer to her studio I’m not sure it would be any safer than walking across campus to an apartment in town.

There are no apartment 'buildings directly on Park, or in College Heights, although there are some rental houses/rooms. Further away is Lions crossing and the other complexes on Martin St , etc. Keep in mind that most all of the complexes on the North end of Atherton are slightly cheaper, come with a bus pass – and hence she will be taking a bus and never walking (which is not an entirely bad thing)

S1 lived in the Meridian (ugh) and the Graduate (not too bad) and now lives in his own apt much further out. Rental season begins soon, but you can check craigslist and see that all is not lost if they miss that boat. things open up if you keep your eyes open and act fast. I would just say(and other locals, feel free to disagree) that you want to stay away from the Waupelani area, except for The Retreat (brand new)

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated. Her roomates’s parents are coming up this weekend and I’m told they are going to start the search.

just an update - D was able to secure a house in College Heights for her and her two roomates for next fall. They each have their own bedrooms and its a block from campus. She is very happy that she and her friends will be together since there was no easy way for the three of them to be together on campus. They are in North now and according to the campus housing office Beam will be the only dorm in North that will NOT be SLO next year.
